New fence to keep people out

/ New fence to keep people out #61
I live in the country and during the summer had a lot of problems with people jumping our fences. We had 7 wire, 4point barb to keep the herd of Angus in the fence. Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson spoke a couple of times in the air and the rumor started to spread about staying away from our place. We Never saw the Law in our area, so we did the next best thing. "Redneck Law"
Don't know where you live but its just a thought and it worked for us.

How about a sign that say's " Mushroom picking, $500 per day per person. Pay attendant"

If their going to do it try and make some money. I had a "city slicker" neighbor that bought all kinds of animals and grazed his place to dirt. His mules and goats where always on my place. I finally told him my land rented for $250 a day per animal for grazing, I haven't had an issue since, in fact he bought and "installed" (if that's what you want to call it) goat wire on the inside of the fence. If he would have asked I would have helped him from day one, but he suffers from "cityitous".

New Hampshire's state flower is the purple liliac. My neighbor has 2 large roadside bushes that sets very large deep purple blossoms. He tired of passerbys cutting his blossoms & put up a sign offering them for $50 per bunch. He's had no customers in several years, but when you take anything offered for sale without paying the concept of theft is more understood, even by plolice. MikeD74T

jpm1 speaks rightly... even 7 strands of 4 point barb will NOT stop a determined **** sapiens, neither will any combination of electric or barb wires. At a correctional facility, it takes a man dishing out lead poisioning to enforce the fence, on occasions.

So, you are seeking a combination of realistically priced deterrent forces to reduce the number of people who "want to" enter your property. There will always be some who are undeterred, I fear, and will require your most aggressive legal attack.

I am guessing that the deterrent percentages are as follows:

0-95%>prior knowledge they are unwelcome... thus drive elsewhere ..increases over time depending on success of following deterrents.

80%>observing sign that property is posted (your number)

3%>observing placement of boundary fence making it very clear that entire property is posted with no very easy way in.

3%>consider too difficult for all in party to go over 1 strand of barb

3%>consider too difficult to go under 1 strand of barb without getting on ground.

3%>consider too difficult to roll under barb wire..increases with success of cactus plantings

3%>discover that wire is electric and don't want any part of it anymore.

= 95% that leave without entry to your property.

5% invent a way past the fence (I think this will be true, regardless of what kind of fence you have) via destroying it, shorting it out, climbing over, under, etc....

4.5% of these are convinced by a combination of non specific gunfire and/or factual confrontation to leave the property.

oh, yes, just realized...TAKE A VIDEO CAMERA WITH YOU AND RECORD THE TRESPASSER AND YOU ASKING THEM TO LEAVE and their reaction and leaving or refusing to do so...date and time stamp the video as it is recorded. Now, for repeat offenders, you have very specific details of who, when, where it happened and what they did about it....do this with your shotgun on a sling over your shoulder and KEEP YOUR DISTANCE from the trespasser.... in the end, you need to be able to defend yourself from knives, multiple people, etc..... Unclear what the law in Spain says about self defense, but in Texas there is the Castle Doctrine which still applies.

leaving .5% that require legal dealings .... hopefully, less than that.

that's my $.02 worth:D

If you start with one barb wire and are dissatisfied, you can place a 2nd barb line about 6 inches off the ground...making it hard to go under while still making it hard to wrap the two wires together and shorting out the entire fence...

Exactly, I want most to not want to get in. If they really want they'll find a way. I know a few will do anything to get in. In any case, it's a very different problem having a lot of people, than having just a few.

I agree with your figures, I'm expecting something along those numbers.

Right now I have 4 barbed wires ... is your porposal to replace those with one barbed (low) and one electrified? That's not much of a visual barrier, even if it's full of signs and effective.

Castle Doctrine: Wish we had that. After a dictatorship regime, they moved many laws too much to really give the impression we are a democracy. They start to realice the "too much", but are slow to fix it.

My solution was quite fun. We have 10 acres of orchards and woods. It seemed everyone around thought that they had a right to hunt and pick apples. Well the no trespassing signs did nothing. The beware of dogs did nothing because they new the dogs were confined to their runs near the house. Finally I had enough when I was walking through the woods and saw a tree stand put up on my land.

So..... I had the Invisible Fence people come out and install the fence on all 10 acres. At first people though I just flagged the boundaries with the white flags as another scare tactic. It wasn't until the cops showed up saying they received a 911 call from a hunter stuck in a tree because a Doberman was sitting quietly at the base waiting for him. Needless to say, the dogs do a good job of patrolling the property lines...

That's pretty much what I was thinking. You don't need a fence to keep the people OUT, just a fence to keep the dogs or bull IN. :)

Mostly Lactarius deliciosus, one of the worst between the edible ones, but there's a lot of tradition. They sell at anything between 1$ and 6$ a pound. There are lots of them so they are worth more money than trees + pastures combined. There are lots of these. Pasture is worth 3 or 4 times the trees. So many people come, that they don't pick much per person ... they are not after money.

Some come after Pleurotus eryngii, which is one of the best. I really like this one, and it should also be quite profitable.

Others, many great edibles, are just smashed or kiked away. Nobody takes the Amanita phaloides, which is also very common. I'm sure other species will appear as quite common once people stop smashing them.

No black truffles as this is acid soil.

I'm really considering buying, or renting one or two brave bulls (or cows). It would be fun wathing people run when they encounter one between the trees. I only see dogs as workable in the open area where Pleurotus eryngii is. I'll think about it. Dogs don't usually eat mushrooms so that's a plus ... cows do.

How about making the mushrooms less attractive. Get some of the landscaper chalk marking paint and spray the mushrooms. I don't think anyone would want orange mushrooms.

Another and cheaper option would be a sprayer with food coloring.

On 150 acres daily? Not doable, and I want the mushrooms.
