Not trying to answer for Gary. But my new First Choice rear finish mower was delivered to my driveway in an enclosed semi van. The driver moved to the rear doors of the van with a pallet jack. I then slung it with a tow strap, from the FEL. It was enclosed in plastic and banded to a pallet.

Ok Gary,

Nice of you to rub some salt in my wounds. Seattle is much further than Indiana so my box blade isn't here yet. I'm hoping any old day now.

I think I got the BB20-60 as well but I told Pieter that if he could get me the BB30-60 faster then I would take that one.

It sure looks like a great blade. Nice design Jim.

TD, I was showing my "Light Duty" unit to a buddy this morning and his only comment was "(Expletive deleted)! I'd hate to see what they call 'Heavy Duty.' You'd need a (expletive deleted) bulldozer to move the (expletive deleted) thing."

I'm sure the BB-30 is very nice but with this as heavy duty as it is I can't imagine needing anything any tougher built for my application. As tough as it is to wait for a new toy you know is coming, I have to believe you'll be happy with it when you get it.

If it make you feel any better, I noticed in your profile you're still a brush hog ahead of me in the toy department. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I'm hoping to cure that soon however. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I've already got my dibs in for a "Light Duty" 60" rotary cutter in that beautiful John Deere green. Right now I'm just waiting for the company to start manufacturing them. Given the way I've been impressed with the box blade, can you guess whose rotary cutter I'm getting? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Gary,

I'm with you. I've seen some pictures that Pieter sent to me. The thing is going to be awesome. I'm thinking of purchasing a RFM in the next couple of weeks. I know Kodiak/Russ has one and likes it. I'm thinking the guys at First Choice will be just that for me. Besides they are great to deal with anyway. I wish my local JD dealer had half of the customer attitude.

Unfortunately in my profile I didn't mention how really crappy my brush hog is. It is an old model (and not widely recognized as an industry leader) and not as wide as my tread. I couldn't get the blades off so I sharpened them in place and got her all hooked up. I think I'll paint it so i can at least tolerate looking at the darn thing. I know it doesn't have to look good to do it's job but this is beyond that. Maybe this is why I'm so looking forward to an actual new attachment with the shiny green paint.

Maybe it'll be home today when I get there./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Gary,
Mind if we know what you paid with shipping? I live closer to First Choice so my cost may be a little less. A box blade is the next thing I'm trying to convince the CFO I can't be without /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Gary in Indiana, Nice description of the unload. I can see how one would do that from a utility type trailor. Thank you, Kodiak, for your response as well.

Where I'm having some problems is cranking up my imagination (bear in mind, I don't yet own a tractor) to visualize how a small compact tractor could raise its FEL high enough to retreive a large, heavy attachment from an 18 wheeler trailer. I guess (A) the trailers are not as high as I seem to think they are, (B) the reach of a FEL is greater than I think, or (C) All of the above.

You might be able to see from my question that I'm already fantasizing about ordering attachments for the tractor I don't even own yet. I might talk myself into getting a larger tractor than I need just to make sure I can unload stuff from an 18 wheeler. How's that for justification? "Just think, honey, if I get a tractor, should we ever order something really heavy, I can unload it from the freight truck."

Probably won't work. I thought for sure she would be convinced after I showed her the picture of watering the flower bed with the FEL. She suggested we just use a hose. Women!

I did my best to "work a deal" as I always do. In this case I didn't have a local dealer so I knew I was going to have to deal with one a little ways away. Since I was going to have to do that anyhow I got a list of a number of dealers and went to work. I knew exactly what I wanted and had priced competative models so I had an idea where I wanted to be on price. I made some calls, faxed some letters and essentially put my business up for bid. Having a rather non-descript company name may have helped. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Let me say a couple things here. If I'd had a local dealer I doubt I'd have been able to do this and probably wouldn't have wanted to do it. I'd rather support a local business when I can if they're close on price.

Since I wasn't local to the dealers I did my best to sell the fact that this was "plus" business for them with no overhead other than taking my phone call. I emphasized that they didn't have to inventory the item and pay floor planning on it and wouldn't have to pay someone to offload, assemble, display, sell, deliver or load it. I explained they'd likely have my money at least a couple weeks before they even got their invoice from First Choice on the box blade and even longer on the rotary cutter. Just take my certified check from the FedEx guy and call First Choice on their toll free number and have them ship to a different address. What could be simpler?

I made my deal on the box blade, a rotary cutter and a couple non-First Choice items, too, so I don't have a dollar amount on just the box blade but I'd say I ended up with better than LandPride or Woods/Gill quality for not much more than King Kutter pricing. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

After the fact I mentioned something about the possibility of more deals like this coming his way via the Internet (thinking this would be a good thing). To my amazement, this old boy told me in no uncertain terms that he didn't want to become "an Internet implement dealer." He changed like someone threw a light switch at the mention of "Internet." /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Based on that I can't be comfortable recommending him for this kind of stuff now and won't. I got the impression had I said mine was an "Internet" deal, he'd have passed.

Oh, well... to each their own, I guess.

Anyhow, I imagine Jim or Pieter will give you a list a dealers near you and you can take it from there like I did. Please understand, I'm not saying my way of doing this is the best or even good. I'm only saying that for me with my background and being able to "talk the talk" with the dealers, it worked for me. Again, if you have a local dealer that's where I'd go.

Bmac, semi trailer deck height is approximately 48". To offload with a front end loader bucket or backhoe you simply need to be able to be higher than that plus the height of your item plus whatever length of chain/strapping you want to have hanging between your load and point of attachment to your lifting mechanism and still have enough room to lift it clear. (assuming the weight is OK).

There is a very dangerous way you might be tempted to 'cheat' if you're not quite high enough for all of that. If you attach to the load and can't lift it but have to pull it off anything beyond a very light load can not only damage your loader or backhoe but also cause your tractor to gyrate violently and possibly even tip when the load falls off then end of the trailer. Be careful.

Ideally, some loader forks you can get to about 54" and still keep level would be the way to go for a palletized load. I wish I had some. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Here is how to cheat. Go to walmart and get a set of those cheap ramp kits. The kind with the ramp end that you attach to a couple of boards.

Set that against the side or end of the trailer and just pull it off letting it slide down the ramp.

You may have to pick up on the leading edge of the pallet to get it over the ramp lip but that should be easy enough to do with the bucket.

Go easy and the load should just slide down the ramps to the ground.
