That's what I'm worried about.

So if I use that Poly something fill between the stones will that prevent growth there?

Polymer but I'm no expert. I've seen good patios and a bad one.

Yeah, that's it. I figured it was a manmade material and would restrict growth? But I guess it would eventually get impregnated with dust and life would begin. Such is this great Planet called Earth.

No... eventually mother nature will blow in debris that will be a media for growth. Regular maintenance is still required.

So I might as well use fine sand.

I'll let you know next year after I let my pavers settle over the winter (they shouldn't move due to the plate compactor I used) and I add the polymer next spring. IF it seals well then power washing won't wash out the sand if you used it. I just power washed pavers around a Florida pool and ended up with lots of sand in the pool.

Pixguy, did you use sand as the top base to set the pavers? When I've used sand, I used a screed to get an even 1" and set the pavers in that soft sand. It was a pita to keep the sand undisturbed while I worked setting pavers. I redid a section of walk last week that I put in 15 years ago, building up the lower base that settled from a service trench and widening it overall with 411's (1" down to dust) well tamped. Then I compacted about an inch of what I used to call limestone screenings (now they call them #10's) and compacted that to a nice firm smooth surface. It was a great surface to lay pavers, but I've read that sand drains better so it's the preferred surface to lay pavers. I'm just curious how you've done yours or others in the past.

Yes, I laid sand down from 1-2" below pavers and then laid pavers on it. Yes, it can be a pita if the sand is dry and you walk along it to work. I also have a pavers edging on the high side and laid the plastic edging along the low side to try to eliminate any sand runoff before the grass grows in the spring.

Oh wow!!! I hadn't even thought of that. I'm a power wash guy and would expect to wash the stone patio at least once a year!!!!! I'll be doing my project late Summer next year so keep me informed if you don't mind. Thanks Pixguy!!!!
