Luke, have you heard about the newer models having any type of problems due to emissions restrictions, catalytic coverters, or any of that crap?

I'm seriously considering paying one of my friends to head down to texas to grab that L3901 with the trailer and all of the other stuff!

An M series is awfully big for 22acres. Also awfully big to do work in the woods. At least that first M is a shuttle shift but still not HST. IMO trying to learn loader work on a tractor that big is a recipe for disaster (personal and property) especially if you'll ever be working around structures.
Personally the biggest I do (and did go) would be the very base MX or the delux L6040 or L6060.
I think you're looking at the right model.
$3k for either of the possible hoe attachments is still a pretty good deal (just not to good to be real like the original deal).
I personally am very wary of buying tractors long distance.

You're right... I somehow didn't realize that one wasn't hydrostatic.

In my defense, the guy in Texas isn't trying to sell it long distance... he's trying to sell it 'local pickup only'... which certainly separates it from the typical Craigslist scams. That tractor is practically brand new, hydrostatic, and it's got a ton of extra stuff coming with it. How does the bucket compare to the one on the L3940? Seems like that extra 'claw bucket thingy' would be pretty cool!

Im a post behind you.
For me, I'd only do that if my friend was a tractor expert.
Not big issues with L tier4 components that i know of. Mostly fear mongering from some very vocal people on TBN. However, who knows what will happen as they age. I do think Kubota is the best bet in term of long-term support. Especially with the Kubota insurance.

Forget the BH and just buy the 3940 and rent when you need a BH. IMOP

Yes a grapple of about any type is extreamly useful. That particular one is what many people would call a root grapple or root rake grapple. Looking at $1200-3000 to buy new if your tractor already has accessory hydraulics run to the loader. Maybe $200-1200 to plumb the hydraulics depending on how you do it.

OK.. L3901 is a new tier 4 machine, but it is much lighter, and slightly smaller machine. It is also a "standard" machine not a Grand L. they are not bad machines, just missing quite a few things as compared to a Grand L. Many people like them, because of the price point, and as for the lower weight, many consider that an advantage when mowing. It is not advantage for any kind of loader/dirt work.

The "bucket thingy out front" is a type of grapple. It is a root rake style. It is a good style for brush, and not as good for logs/rocks. Each style of grapple has plus and minus points. The grapple appears to be operate by a rear remote. Depending on where the control is located, that may or may not be handy to operate.

The rotary cutter appears to be a landpride, this is a good thing, one of the better brands. The photo shows an Armstrong box blade but the description mentions a subsoiler. hmm.. big difference between a subsoiler (about $150) and a boxblade (maybe $700). Pig in poke there. He also mentions throwing in the original pin on bucket, that is worth about $100. It can be converted with some money and work to another SSQA bucket. I did it here.

So overall not a bad deal price wise, but need some clarification on what you are getting. But the Grand L deal on the L3940 also needs some clarification on what you are getting. Of course there is no backhoe on the L3901 deal. Do you really need a backhoe? Maybe make a cash offer on the Grand L as is where is. for about $21,000? These are just some ideas.. Good luck on whatever you choose to do.

This is what I would do also, but that is me....

Same here only because you will be surprised what you can accomplish with that tractor and loader and you can actually add the BH later if you find it lacking. Use the $$ on some other very handy 3pt implements.

For getting a tractor that nice and it being your first tractor, be prepared to crap yourself with joy!!!
