So here are some pictures of the lights.

In the Grille (note 3 coats of paint on plastic I am in the process of stripping):

How the cans mount in the Grille from the back with screen in place (note snapped off studs, and masked over socket holes in the middle):

Cans with screen removed:

Rotted chrome rings:

Rotted can:

One of the clips that hold the ring and lens on. I need 4 more to replace rotted ones:

Not sure I've seen that. What year is your 1700? My 1983 1100 doesn't have any plastic on the grill at all. The grill itself is some kind of metal mesh.

I believe it is a 1982. The grille is a plastic shell, with two pieces of wire mesh (upper and lower) and the headlights. Everything attaches by screws or studs mounted in the plastic.

OK, the gray part with "Ford" looks plastic. Mine got cracked years ago and it is some kind of pewter or possibly aluminum alloy. I didn't have a way to weld it so It got a dose of JB Weld. I did a search for the SBA number on the headlight assembly and it doesn't look good for a drop in aftermarket or used one. If you measure the diameter you might get close with a motorcycle assembly and bulb. There's a wrecked BMW 1200 in my shop that has 2 real nice headlights from the fairing. I would look for something like that since the mounting into the grill is not elaborate in the least.
