New guy with cut/scut questions

That can be problematic as I ran into the same thing when I bought my BX2660. They were so popular, no one had them in stock for a while, so I drove some distance to look at one. When a shipment finally came in, I got the next to last one. I was going from a BX2200, so I knew they were good machines.

I had never done business with them, but they were a well established dealership branching out from another city.

TripleR, I looks like you have had at least a couple SCUTs. How do you like them? I am not expecting to do heavy duty work with mine, as mentioned I will probably mow and do some light landscaping. In the spring my yard is soft so I don't want anything too heavy that will tear up the lawn. I am actually considering the Massey 2410 TLB also since I could probably benefit from redoing some drainage ditches to help the yard dry out quicker in the spring.

I am starting to look into buying a new tractor. I just bought a house with about 2 acres, mostly grass. I currently have a small John Deere LX176 with a 38" deck. I would like to reduce my mowing time and I also have a lot of plans for landscaping where a FEL would come in handy. So far I have looked at Cub Cadets, John Deere, Kubota and Massey Ferguson. All things being equal, I like the Massey (GC2400) the best but the dealer is the farthest away (close to an hour drive). The dealer seems to be great and the salesperson spent a lot of time answering questions. The Cub and the Deere/Kubota dealers are much closer (within 10-15 minutes) but they have not been as helpful. Also, I have heard bad things about the Deere/Kubota service dept. I like the Kubota B series tractors as well but the dealer makes me a little concerned.

If anyone has similar models or other suggestions I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks in advance for your time.

Very nice machines LBrown59! I may still go with a Kubota despite the dealer. Its not so much that I have heard that they are bad but slow for repairs. They don't always complete a repair on the first trip and to get them to follow up and finish is a chore. Everyone in the neighborhood has Kubotas as well, I know they are doing something right. :thumbsup:

I started out with a BX2200 with 60" deck and MMM several years ago and loved it immediately. I had been using a John Deere 425 and Ford NAA to take care of my property and found with the BX, I no longer needed the Ford, so I "loaned" it to my brother who lives on one of our other farms.

In 2007 I bought a John Deere 2305 with MMM, I didn't get a FEL as I had two bigger tractors on that farm with FEL's.

In 2008, I began thinking about getting a B Series to replace the BX and happened to mention it to my son in law who had wanted it and before I really thought much about it, I sold him my BX2200.

After several months of research and crawling on and off more tractors than I care to think about, I decided I should have kept my BX2200 as the BX was and is the best tractor for my property. I then bought the BX2660 over the BX2360 solely because of the seat as I am getting older and have a bad back.

While I love my Kubota, I have had a lot of trouble with the John Deere 2305 as to reliability. It was in the shop three times because of the hydraulic deck lift and finally was out about $1000 because the dealer would not cover it since the warranty had just expired. It also over heats and we have to let it cool off a couple of times every time we use it. I think we just got a lemon as John Deere makes really good equipment.

I have several properties, so I have to have bigger tractors, but if it wasn't for that, the BX will do it all.

You've got 2 acres and a LX176/38" deck. You want to (A) reduce mowing time and (B) get some landscaping done.

A) Trade in your LX176/38" deck and buy a new LA175/54" deck w. PowerFlow bagger.
B) Rent a skid steer to complete your DIY landscaping projects.

The point I'm getting at is once your landscaping is done, do you need a tractor anymore? A couple of weekend skid steer rentals is a LOT cheaper then buying or financing a tractor/FEL. The LA175/54 deck and bagger will speed up your mowing chores tremendously!

dmay, thanks, I have thought about that too. I was thinking of getting a zero turn to handle the mowing and renting/borrowing a CUT. The problem for now is my job has a habit of messing with any plans that I make. The last time I rented a wood chipper for a day I got ordered in to work half way through the day. It happens a lot. From what I can see the tractors hold their value pretty well so I don't mind buying one. I have a feeling that with the way my wife changes her mind about things I will have jobs for the machine from now 'til the day I die. If in a couple years I find that I'm not using it I can always sell it. This way I can have it to use for the few free hours I get here and there.
