I am looking for info on interchanging A komatsu 3D84 engine to a yanmar equivalent. I blew an engine and think it is a ring. Still runs but a lot of smoke and burns oil like crazy. Just looking for a cheap fix as the machine is old and tired but exactly what works best around here. It is a Komatsu PC38UU and the engine has a komatsu label but I am sure it is a 3 cylinder yanmar.

Ummm .... the 3D84 .. IS a Yanmar engine! I have a 3D84-1C in a Komatsu WA30-2 loader here ... very tired, but this machine is the most used here, out of eight on site. Actually .. I have three Komatsu's here .. PC50UU-2 and a D21P5 as well ... all Yanmars. You will find Yanmar's in Fords and John Deere's as well. They make diesels up to 5,000 hp .. and they are certainly prevalent in several brands up to about 80 hp.

I wouldn't balk at swapping in a new one, rather than rebuilding, if I could find one that would just bolt in. On the WA30-2 .. the throttle set-up is one of the worse pieces of crap engineering I have ever seen .. it would be a joy to modify the throttle to the right side of the engine where it should be.

Something seems to have gone flackey with the govenor .. and with over 11,000 hours on this hard working little 29 hp 3 cylinder puppie .. if I gotta yank it .. I would just a soon put in a new one ... on the loader .. it is like totally burried ... a real pita to r+r.

It took me two years to finally land one of these little beauties .. very hard to find here in the US. Has quick change .. 1/2 yard bucket to forks ... awesome machine. Any suggestions are certainly welcome. Yes, I do have both the parts book and shop manual .. little help there. TIA
