New Holland 8N

I called our local dealer today. He knows about it ,said it is 50 hp and will sell for 20-25k.
All of the calls he has fielded, everybody was asking about a 30 hp version, he said he thinks New Holland dropped the ball on this one

Brian, I agree with everyone who says 50 hp is better. I own this size frame tractor (TC45D) and 30 hp would be a joke for the frame size. Perhaps your dealer was thinking about a TC30 sized tractor with all the bells and whistles of the new Boomer 8N. While it sounds feasible and desirable, I'd bet a smaller tractor with a CVT and new technology would be so expensive by comparison that it would look like a "bar of gold" sitting next to the TC30 or the Class II Boomers. I think you have to find an entry point in your market where a product will sell. My guess is the Boomer 8N will be priced in the low to mid $30k range with the loader. I could be wrong and hope I am, but that's where I'd put my bet.:)

Plus a 30 horse compact is mostly used by homeowners where as the 50 horse compact is used by homeowners who own acerage as well as small farms and large farms who want a compact for around their farm. The 50 horse Boomer 8N is going to be more attractive to the farmers who grew up around the original N series tractors and they may be more willing to pay a premium for it where as a homeowner is going to look at price more then nostaliga for the most part.

With the economy going down the toilet a little further every day, don't you think the vast majority of CUT sales will be of the "weekend" farmer variety that still have money or jobs and will really try to stretch a buck? Suburban homes with 5 or 10 or 20 acres looking to buy a tractor to do lawn, snow, load manure from 2 or 3 horses...etc? 25K is too pricey for the "We maybe could use a tractor, lets go buy a CUT" crowd. Just my opinion, But I still have Gramps 41 Farmall A....That's all he could afford. Sure, he could of used a bigger one, but that's all he could afford. Times will get tougher, and money will get tighter........Yeah, I was interested in the hype, but 20-25K, no thanks. Just my opinion, which is worthless, I know...

That is the problem with manufacturing big ticket items. From the time you do your research to the time it finally hits showroom floors can span a couple years or more. So you either launch it and hope or scrap it and call it a loss.

I think the possible advantages of the CVT coupled with the retro styling appeal will sell more units in this climate than more of the same old, same old in the same HP level at a similar price point. It replaces the EHSS 12x12 which is the least durable powertrain NH has offered over the last 10-15 years in a CUT. In terms of attempting to maintain sales volume, releasing such a product in the stated timeframe may be a stroke of accidential good fortune.

I see the 30 HP market being filled with T1510's and T1520's (TC30's) for the duration of the downturn. A CVT in this range would be dead in the water competing with economy spec tractors of all brands in this range IMHO.

I agree with you Rick. I feel this model will sell well in this market because it appeals to more people then a 30 hp model. It is big enough for farmers yet small enough for small land owners. Plus these people generally are going to be familiar with the Ford 8n so NH is hoping that will appeal to them. I like it and would love to see one around here. I have other tractors I need before a 50 horse compact utility so I won't be buying one anytime soon.

Interesting estimate, probably better than the unknown dealer. Plus all the chrome extras a farmer can't live without. Tough market out there, maybe there will an intro special.

So if you are buying a 45-50 hp tractor do you buy a regular Boomer for less, spend more for the retro 8N, or spend that larger amount on a bigger Boomer.

Only a few more months.

For my part, I hope this new 8N will be well received and will lead to the styling being spread around the Boomers in the future. I would like to see a full line of 8N styled deluxe compacts available because I think the styling is sharp and the Gray/Red color scheme is as classic as JDs Green/Yellow.

Also, the size and pricing may be their way of limiting the size of the market when they first introduce this CVT in the compacts so that any teething issues don't impact their full line. Then when/if the bugs are worked out (hopefully there will be none), NH will spread this CVT around to other models as well.

Most of the retro cars that are/were made were of pretty low quality and didn't have a name like the "8N" to badge their offering. It seems to me these cars have fizzled out after a few years. But, If this is as well made as it appears...I would think this model could be around for a long time. Almost every farm has had an old ford on it at one time or another...many still do. Sorta the hallmark of utility tractors.

Too bad they didn't call this model a Jubilee....that would leave them a little room for a smaller 8N and maybe a 9N or 2N models to follow at a latter time - for guys with smaller needs - like me. :D But then....I imagine marketing probably thought of that...lol.

I think they are going to sell allot of 'em. Very Nice.
