As far as tractors go this is about as cool as they get.

I just looked at the original sales reciept for my 1951 8n that the original owner's widow gave me when I bought it. $1435.00 is what they went for then, and that was considered high. I think I paid her $1500 or so for the tractor with 1200 hrs, a Dearborn 2-bottom plow, disk, cultivator, and front snowplow back in the late 80's. The funny thing is that my grandad went with a JD M back in 1950 because he said that grey paint was just too expensive.

For what it's worth, using the Nominal GDP index, $1435 in 1951 equals $30,601 in 2008. Other indexes using different indicators produce results ranging from $9900 to over $60,000. http://www.ask.com/bar...

The engine is from the TC tractor line up . The transmission and rear end was something that none of us recognized from other New Holland tractors. Our guess was that it was something from Europe that comes along with the new CVT transmission.

I've read in an old magazine that New Holland introduced a CUT with the CVT here last year... Its just a standard styled one with blue black and white paint scheme.

The 8N wasnt a big thing in Europe. The Ferguson TEF was a way more legendary tractor, even though it was basically the same tractor... Maybe just the engine was different, as i've never seen a flathead TEF ??

I wonder what you got for your money when buying that M ?? I mean, the 8n only had 4 gears and would get stuck only because it didnt have a low enough gear, nor the low end torque to pull yourself out of a mudhole.. IF the M was cheaper, did it offer less gears or features than an 8N ? I mean, how much more basic than an 8N can a tractor be ?

John Deere M- 18 belt HP, 4 spd. trans., 2 cyl. gasoline eng., suggested list in 1952 was $1045 USD.
Ford 8N- 25.77 belt HP, 4 spd. trans., 4 cyl. gasoline eng., suggested list in 1952 was $1404 USD.

I input belt HP because TractorData did not list PTO hp for the M.

The M is a nice tractor but a pain to get on and off. I love mine but only because it was the first tractor I ever got to play around with of my own. It also had the hydraulic lift system that only took John Deere M only implements. It was a good unit with more ground clearance but less stable then the 8n. They were basically the same type tractors as far as options go but the M is more of a cultivating tractor.
