New Holland LOADER safety notice!

I got home early today after eating lunch with my daughter in her elementary school (yum /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) only to find a safety notice in the mail from New Holland.

It applies to the Model 12LA loaders (and maybe other curved arm sizes?) and in part it says:

There is a potential concern where the forward boom cylinder fittings may bend/leak or break due to insufficient clearance between teh forward boom cylinder fitting and the boom causing the boom to drop unexpectedly . . .

Anyone else get this?

I got mine. Not really clear which fitting they are talking about, will have to go out with a light or pull out the manual to research it a bit.

I like their wording - "potential concern" - sounds like they already have the concern, no potential about it!

I'll give my dealer a call tomorrow to see what their take is on all this. I'm glad I negotiated free transportation during the warrantee period.

Thinking about it, that makes sense.

I went out to look at mine and it is a real problem. On mine, more so on the right (starboard) side. The hydraulic line fitting at the front of the lower cylinder is a right angle fitting and mine has hit the loader arm repeatedly to the point the paint is chipped to bare metal and the fitting shows wear. The other side is also chipped and worn, but not quite as bad. The right side is leaking hydraulic oil slightly, appears to be from the threads of the fitting from repeated stress. No pics as it is dark here in the northeast.

I think it was an excellent call on NH's part. Mine will be in ASAP. I've worked around enough heavy equipment to know what happens when a line ruptures.

Is it possible to post a pic of the offending fitting/cylinder, so I know what to look at on mine?

Here is a close up of where the fitting is hitting the loader arm. I set the camera on macro and acutally got a better view sticking the camera inside than I was able to see with the naked eye. Notice the dirty area on the cylinder, this is the hydraulic oil leak. Not much, never dripped. Just enough to coat the area. Who knows how long its been leaking. The other side is not leaking yet.

They probably could do a house call, I'll leave it up to them. I would think a warm shop, which I do not have, would be their preference to work.

Brad, you beat me to the camera. I checked mine also, mine is dented and paint is chipped a bit worse than yours, but I didn't see any leaking.

I wonder if this is just limited to the 12LA loader?

That sounds like the easy solution. Of course, our tractors with the 16LA loader have the front fitting on the side, offset 90° from the one on the back. I doubt NH will replace the cylinder with one similar to ours. They'll probably fix the problem the easier way by rotating the cylinder 180°, putting the fitting on the bottom. It will be a bit more exposed, but not get smashed by the loader structure.
