IE.. the differenc ein a napa 1515 vs a 1452.. both fit and cross to a fram ph8a/motorcraft fl1a a common ford filter. I can get a motorcraft fl1a for 2.99 or 3.99 from a regular auto parts store.. the ph8a is 4.99.. I see walmart supertech filters have a cross for that filter now.. it's something like 2.88.. and is a smaller can size.. though the thread and oring is the same size.

for .11 cents.. I like the fl1a motorcraft for my fords... :)

I like to buy the OEM stuff from my dealer. You know the stuff is right, it helps keep them in business, they know my mug when I walk in, it maintains a relationship. If something breaks on my tractor they will likely help me out or back me up. Try getting help from Wally World or even Napa on your tractor:rolleyes:

Some interesting info there. Please keep in mind that this was done by a Chrysler car guy, so it will not include industrial filter, just car/truck stuff. I worked at Chrysler in the engine lab area for 27 years and saw lots of different subtle changes in filters, yet we never knew who made them. It probably was just the lowest bidder....

One thing should be pretty clear if you have made it through this entire article. While there are dozens of oil filter brands out there, there are only a few actual manufacturers. Most filters you see on the shelf are sold by companies that don't actually make oil filters. The exceptions are Baldwin/Hastings, Champ, Donaldson, Purolator, and Dana/WIX. Those are actual manufacturers and you can be fairly certain of what is inside the can. Although Fram hasn't made filters in decades, it seems that the brand is tied closely enough to Honeywell that you can be pretty sure about what is in the orange can (for better or for worse). Most other brands contract one of these companies to make filters for them. They seem to change from time to time, so one has to be vigilant when purchasing one. Anyone that doesn't include Fleetguard as a filter manufacturer lacks the credibility to be a reliable source of info on the topic, especialy for off-road applications. Additionally, comparing one example of a particular filter application and extrapolating findings across the range of a particular brand is questionable, to be polite.

I suppose "ignorance is a bliss":eek:, in the last 30 years I've always used Fram oil filter and Penzoil and really for no particular reason*. I change oil religiously in my vehicles and drive my vehicles to the ground. I only had to overhaul one engine(short block) once and it was not due to type of oil rather than lack of it:(. I yet to have any issues with my vehicles known or unbeknowst to me. I change vehicle oil@ 3000 and my tractor every 50 hrs of use. I read some not very complimentary opinions about Fram.

Am I doing any disservice to my vehicles and tractor?

around here, a motorcraft fl1a is actually 1$ cheaper than a fram ph8a.

On my old gasser tractors.. I have no brand loyalty to oil... if it's clean and on sale.. it's fine.. pep boys had some 9.99 do it your self oil change specials this summer.. 5qts oil and your choice of a fram or stp or other cheap ( 4$ or less ) oil filter for 10$. I got enough of those for my gassers... my guess is that they are just happy to see clean oil. since I am getting way less that the '100 hrs ' prescribed in the manuals.. more like 1/3rd that.. I bet they are just fine with cheap oil.

my diesels on the other hand.. I am using motorcraft diesel oil in them and oem filters..

to spendy to mess with a diesel..

My dealer sells NH OEM oil filters cheaper than the NAPA dealer in town. It's a no brainer.....:p

Oddly enough the last oil filter I got from my dealer was a WIX. I didn't occur to me to insist on a NH brand filter when I'm buying from the NH dealership. For this last go around I bought all NAPA branded filters from the local NAPA parts guy. Seems like I got the same thing anyway!
