New hot water heater

And Gatorboy and I have a friendly debate over the wording of his sig. You see, he uses the words "10 kinds of people" , and he describes two states -- understanding binary, or not. Now, in binary, each digit can represent a state -- 0 is off, and 1 is on, for example. Thus, by the time one counts to one (0 -- 1), one has already experienced two states or kinds. By the time one counts to 10, (0 -- 1 -- 10), one has gotten to three different kinds. Thus, I believe his sig should say, "There are 1 kinds of people in the world -- those who understand binary, and those who don't."

Since we think alike on so many other subjects (I was also going to ask Hambone why he wanted to heat hot water), we have agreed to disagree on this representation of binary. But I had to get my 10 cents in... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So, I guess in Base-10 when you count to ten you have really gotten to 11 states (0..10)? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

All I have to say on this subject is what is 10 in binary? The answer is two!

(But I do understand your logic, but it doesn't apply to my sentence below)

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif But it this (his) case we are not talking states but quantity... Zero is the absence of qty.. 10 in binary represents the value of 2 (decimal) which is what the statement refers to ....

If you want to start counting at zero we can do it with your paycheck... the first hour is your rate times zero (for the first hour)

Out of curiosity do you start the week on Monday or Sunday?

Before you go and do anything too drastic, try one thing. I have rental properties, and every once in a while, tenants go away for the summer (college town). When they come back, I'll get a call that their hot water smells. I always tell them to turn on all the hot water faucets in the house until they run cold. And do this two or three times. The water in the tank that sits all summer collects that smell from the anode, and you have to completely flush it completely out. Normal use won't get it. Seems to be that if the hot water gets any kind of stink in it, it sort of "infects" the rest of the water. So if you don't do a complete flush, the smell stays. Once they do this, no more problem. I don't know if this will help you, but it's worth a shot. The new tank may just be a little rank inside. Just a thought.

Do you have an aerator? That is what I used to have (along with a water softner) down in Florida on my well -- that is what took the smell out. Sometimes if we were running alot of water throughout the house (showers, dishwasher, wash machine), the water would run down to a point that the aerator could not keep up. Perhaps when the water heater filled up, it was filled with non-aerated water.

How big is your tank? You may want to take Josh's advice and make sure you run the water to flush out the tank.

Ok, now let me do what Im famous for, and argue the other side (which is the same thing as agreeing with you). There are actually 3 possible states -- no kind or people, 1 kind of people and 2 kinds of people. If you think about it that way, then no kinds is represented by "0", 1 kind is represented by "1", and 2 kinds is represented by "10". I'll give you that and quit bugging you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But then, you have to change your sig to this: 'There are 10 kinds of people in the world...those who have never heard of binary, those who don't understand binary, and those who do understand binary." /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Where does the anode go? The top of the tank should have a fitting - mine looks like a pipe plug with a square end.
Are they hard to change? No, just a wrench and some pipe dope.
Expensive??? Last one I changed was years ago, can't remember, but it wasn't any big deal.
Where? Plumbing supply house.

Also, as someone else noted - the anode is a sacrifical item. It's supposed to erode (probably not the correct word) rather than something else - which is your tank! So don't just remove it!

Thanks guys. I will try the flushing thing today.
I will check on anode when go into town, if not too much will get one for fun. Doesn't sound like a big deal.

Thanks again!

I have a more permanent solution but it won't be cheap!

A Reverse Osmosis system will get rid of the sulphur...

I'm sort surprised that your softener removes Iron... here in the great white north I have an iron filter and then the softener then the RO system (but it's only for the icemaker and the 2 taps on that system)....

Me too. There is a local guy that builds his own. The water may not be as soft as a regular softner but it does well(no pun intended) with the iron and sulfer. Until I put in the new WATER HEATER /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
