I've taken the anode out and replaced with a plug. The anode was such a rotten, disgusting thing after a few years use that I don't want it touching water that touches me, no matter how much benefit there is.The tank still lasted for years until I replaced it with a unit that runs off my boiler. Make sure to use the drain on your water heater occasionally to get the crud out of the bottom before it builds up so bad it plugs it, whether you have an anode or not.
