Anyone carry a fire extinguisher in case you set the woods on fire from exhaust? Does the exhaust get that hot? Also keeping the RPMs up...over 2200 RPM or the 540 PTO point? I've been running at the 540 point which I think is around 2200 but I had been throttling back when I stopped. PS LOVE MY GRAPPLE!!!:cool2:
I looked at and test drove a brand new just out of the crate Kubota ZD1511-72 z-turn mower on Saturday. I was thoroughly impressed with how much better it handled (steering) than my ZD331-72. The engine seems quieter also, but it is a much bigger heavier machine. I spoke to the chief mechanic and asked a lot of questions about the machine especially the DPF emissions system and any issues they've had with other equipment with a DPF system. He was very honest about the Kubota B3350 issues with DPF and said they haven't seen any problems since Kubota Corp got involved and corrected the issues (about a year ago). He did say the temperature inside the DPF filter could reach temperatures in excess of 1000 deg F when doing a regen and to be very careful of the hot surfaces. So, I see why you asked about keeping a fire extinguisher handy. I am leaning towards getting the ZD1511-72.

Oh, and congrats on your new tractor. The grapple is a very useful attachment.

Yes the exhaust does get that hot. The dpf engines are a real problem for the forest and agriculture industries because of the exhaust temps during a dpf burn.

Don't putt around with short duty , light loads and stop/start operation. Any diesel, Tier IV in particular operates best with the fuel tank filled and the engine operated at full rated rpm making full rated power continiously and only shutting down to refill the fuel tank.

That's just about exactly what the mechanic told me on Saturday when looking at and test driving the ZD1511-72.

If you are old enough you remember just how bad diesel exhaust can get..., cleaner now than it used to be... But it can Never be too clean. that soot is not only hard to see through, but it's also not good for anyone's health... if it costs You a few thousand to remove it from Your exhaust you are protecting someone, your kid's, grand-kid's,neighbors, friends and a Lot of folks you will never have the opportunity to meet... you may even be trading a few thousand now for your own cancer in the future. If you can't see it as a positive change for how you operate your daily life... look at it as doing Something to keep those you love alive and healthy just a bit longer.

I agree with your post.

It sounds like the regen process could be equated to a self induced chimney fire.

I have a tier 4 MX4800 with just over 90 hours and only two regens so far. Both were non events. First was just after switching implements and got the RPM+ light. I was starting to mow, so just went ahead. No problem. Second happened without me noticing anything, but smell. Noticed the smell before even seeing that the light was on. I was concerned about the tier 4 before purchase, now don't see it as an issue at all.

My tractor reads exhaust temp. If I am working hard, I will see 1050 degrees, maybe a little higher. During Regan the hottest has been seen 1122 degrees. I don't think 75 degrees is going to mean burn, baby, burn, but if that is what y'all think. By the way, I found a mouse nest at the DPF and it didn't start it on fire - I had to dig it out.

I have about one thousand hours on my first DPF equipped tractor. Yes, if I work it really hard I will get more hours between regens but I also move a lot of bales, lots of running around fields half throttle or less. No problem although I may get up to 10% fewer hours between regens. I do log regen start, regen stop, and at the end of each day record hours, %DPF, fuel used and what I was doing so I have a record to go by - its not guessing.

I now have about 80 hours on the L6060 I bought to replace my L5740. Other than greatly improved starting and no smell, my biggest surprise is how much better the fuel economy is. I've used 37% less fuel per hour plowing snow this winter with the 6060 than I did last year with the 5740. I've had one regen in the 80 hours but it is now at 82%.

What model tractor is this?
