That is starting to look fantastic. I am starting a similar project on my farm. The prevues owner did a lot of cutting in the woods before he sold it and its in bad shape. I do have a question for you. How do you discourage deer from eating the young trees?

A lot of folks use 4ft of r 5 ft tree tubes. You would think there is no way a tree could grow in one of them but they swear by them. I will just be planting the trees thicker than needed and hope for the best. When I planted the ones in the pictures ( six years ago) I did not tube them and it worked out ok. Deer density and availability of other food during the growing period would make a difference. I do have about a dozen pear trees that I started from seed. I will be putting wire around them.

If you go to forum at the top of any page and scroll down through all the various forums you will find several forums which may help with your deer question and others too. There are forums on land and food plots etc.

lakngulf...excellent pictures and exactly what I am aiming for.

I have had zero luck so far in keeping deer off my seedlings and trees. I have a consultant coming out over Christmas that will offer some solutions. Some of the trees like norway spruce are browse of last resort for deer. However they will attack them while rubbing. I imagine the plan will include some cages, tubes, and chemicals. Also he mentioned creating a smaller fenced in nursery location to grow seedlings until ready for transplant.

Would a specific area electric fence like used for sheep, etc. work to keep them out? You could run a solar powered battery to keep it charged if a long way from the house/barn/electric tree(current bush).
Or land mines!

A lot of folks have terrible luck; the deer and other animals damage the trees early on. As I said before, the tubes are supposed to take care of that. I just cannot see purchasing 250 - 300 tubes, much less the time and effort. I did have some rubbing issues with some of the trees I planted before. I will have to take my chances, but your deer density may call for other measures.

Regarding a fenced area, it will have to be high. My biggest problems getting the seedlings started were squirrels and chipmunks. They LOVED the acorns, so I had to keep them in my greenhouse. They are still there now, almost to the dormant stage, and will be loaded onto my trailer tomorrow night to head to the farm.

I have used solar powered electric fences to keep cows out of food plots, but the deer just jump right over, or run right thru it.

It's in the garage. Too bad it was dark after when the dealer left. I am taking tomorrow off work to play:cool2:

Regarding the deer. A 30-30 works good. On the more serious side, get some waste human hair from the local barber shop and put that around the trees. Pretty well anything that smells like 'human' will work. P on the ground near the trees. Deer have a excellent sense of smell and their hearing is unbelievable. A goose 'scare gun' fires off 12 gauge blanks and that may work.
