I hear ya rScotty. I wondered the same thing where the rest of the DS is . When I changed the oil in the fall, I have takes out the screen which was surprisingly clean (PO did some maintenance lol). But did not find the rod, so it is totally possible that is still resting at the bottom of the case. :scratchchin:

Anyway, my tractor is always covered so hopefully I will not have an issue with the water getting in the case but thanks for the info - always appreciated.

Front axle is a bit of pain to fill for sure but I just followed the specs on the amount of gear oil

Actually, I really like you idea of attaching my new metal rod stick right thru the cap to be safe. I would hate to create another way for water to get in the case thou so I will see what I can come up with. I might have more time on my hand that I would wish for soon but such is life.

Cheers from Canada buys

OK, all sounds good. At least you have a nice tractor to share that extra time on your hands.

I don't like drilling through the cap myself. Gotta be a better way.
Maybe drill through, bulge the rod end, counterbore the 4mm drill hole from the top a quarter inch or so wide & deep, insert rod. backfill with silicon sealer?
Or easier yet, just put the rod in the Yanmar tool kit and take it out once a year to measure oil depth.
Thanks to careyo63 we have a good photo. That's simple. I've seen that too. Lots of old motorcycle tool kits had a calibrated rod right there in the tool roll.
What a good group we have.

Yup, that's even better idea :drink: LOL . ....and that is why you have close to 4000 posts and I only have 20 :mur: haha

Thank you again.

I wonder where the old rod is? Any chance it is lying down there there in the transmission sump? If so, you might get lucky and find it next time you service the cleanable sump filter. BTW, that cleanable filter is something that we should all take out and clean every decade or so...but few of us do.

The measurement of 0.156" is awfully close to being 4mm, so that's probably correct. I'd sure think about how to best affix the rod to the cap. Obviously knurling didn't work for the previous one. I like things easy and permanent, so if I was feeling lazy I'd probably drill right through the cap and take the rod all the way through & put a bulge on the end to hold it.

Just so you know, the main problem with oil in the common transmission/hydraulic sump is that it gets water in the oil. The water enters past the gear shift lever when the tractor is left out in the rain. Over years enough water builds up to make the oil milky and kinda stringy.... which then clogs the cleanable filter.

As for the front axle, the problem is that on some front axle castings Yanmar positioned the filler cap right over the axle shaft. You want the oil level to be roughly half way up the axle shaft, but that is hard to tell since the axle gets in the way of measuring with a rod.
Most of us end up measuring the oil level in the front axle either by draining and refilling with a known amount of oil.... or we look for the level through the fill hole it using a tiny flashlight and a bent piece of welding rod. It's not critical. You want enough motor oil or lightweight gear oil in the front axle so that it can circulate past the un-shielded bearings at the outer ends and get to the right and left right angle gearsets.
good luck,
rScotty

One point worth noting is that while at least in my ym2002D, I have drain plugs on each front hub, the fill is through a single fill port. I will confess I was busy with several projects when I changed gear oil in the front axle and was not paying close attention. I had the front axle jacked up on stands and had taken one wheel off. For whatever reason the axle was not level across the jack stands and this I failed to notice. I added fluid and checked the level. Added more and checked the level. And so on. Well about 2 weeks later, I was check all fluids and front axle was overfilled by about half again the hash marks on the dip stick. Thus I figured out the axle was no level apparently by quite a bit.
I drained about 1.5 pints out.

Ok, so I was wrong again. The DS in front axle is knurled and pressed in the yellow cap.

Tranny DS is threaded. 4mm x .07 if anybody wants to know. So I made my own. Super easy out of a welding electrode. Took the coating of course off, polished it and made threds. Filed flat end and crossed hatched some grooves. Works like slick.
