New "old" trailer- tri axle

That is a good practice for sure but it does require a long trailer if you need to balance the load too.

Now if you decide to use two 6000 lb trailer axles you would have 6000lbs to spare. That's going to buy you a lot of extra bearing life. To figure how much you would need to know the size and brand of bearings and then get the charts for that bearing. But there are lots of extra thoughts that go through bearing engineers minds. For example they think of things like if a bearing is not rotating the pressure on the roller(s) taking the weight will flatten out. Clearly a MH axle could see full loading for extended periods of time (if the house is not lifted off of the axles while waiting to be sold). Another thought is the amount of wear before the grease gets up to operating temps.

I would expect Dexter's engineers to have figured all that in plus the extra radial torque that a multiple axle trailer will see under load. Remember Dexter is going to assume max weight with the max number of axles (I've seen 8 axle MH trailers).

All well and good, but Dexter doesn't make any assumptions about the weight of any given mobile home, nor do they have any clue as to how many of their axles are going to be bolted under it before it hits the road. Additionally, they don't know how far that "trailer" is going to travel. How would they?

They simply say that the mobile home axles they make will handle 6K, but they also say they are rated for "limited" use. We don't need to assume why they say what they say about the issue, it's on their website and they have folks that will explain it over the phone as well.

But what I would say is if my plans were to always be near the rated weight of the axles I don't think I would want MH axles under that trailer.

I know I wouldn't want MH axles under my trailer in those circumstances because it would always be in the back of my mind that the capacity rating from the manufacturer comes with a disclaimer.

Well, sorry to dig up an old post....but figure I'd post here instead of anew thread.

Looking at the original date, May 2010, it's been a while. I can say, I'm a happy with my trailer. I've used it a number of times for local haul and a few not so local. Once we hauled my buddy's "new" JD two wheel drive backhoe/loader home with it (long trip, 200 miles). Bucket was on the I beam tong & hoe was just at the limit of over hand on the back of trailer. I think the back of the truck was over loaded...only an F250 diesel.

It tows wonderfully behind my E350 extended diesel van. All I did to it was add a break away switch and battery. All lights worked and so did all the brakes. And I have not even opened up the hubs yet (I should check/repack the bearing). Buddy hauled a his 4010 to the auction on it and it's hauled back a buddies broken 1 ton Chev diesel van. Had to put two new tires on it (ouch, those are pricey). But other then that, I'm happy!

Oh, according to the title, it weights 4200lbs empty....
