I purchased my JD 790 with loader and mower as a package with my house. Needed quite a bit of maintenance including a new battery, fuel filter (it was black), engine oil change (I don't think it's supposed to look like black paint pouring out of the engine), and I'm changing the hydraulic/transmission oil and changed the gear oil in the front axle. I think tires are needing to be replaced next.

I'm still working on figuring out the more subtle controls on the tractor, such as how to free float the mower for a better cut and getting additional attachments.:cool2:

Wow, new house and tractor all at once. Welcome to the forum. Drop a post in the JD section and someone will be glad to go over the controls for the 790.

Lucky for me my neighbor is somewhat familiar with the machine and was able to give me a brief overview. I will drop into the JD section to ask about floating the mower and better ways to handle the deep snow. Somehow mumbling swear words under my breath while mentally praying "please don't roll please don't roll" is not as good as knowing how to handle bad terrain. :)

Welcome to TBN. Sounds like you are starting out right with your tractor by changing the fluids and filters.
