Spiker, I originally had planned on 10 ft spans, When I went to price the steel trusses, the gentleman who sells them also has a metal panel fab business with presses to roll panels and trim for metal buildings, his shop uses the same trusses on 12ft span with roughcut 2x4 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, so my first thought was wow I can go 60ft vs 50 ft and the only real cost would be the concrete. living in Alabama don't have to worry about snowload. I may very well bump the span back to 10ft just to be safe. Rambler I have thought about laminating the posts together, any suggestions on glue? and when I checked on ground contact treated 2x6 I heard this ,,long pause then "I don't think we can get those". I was concerned about not being able to use ground contact for the posts. probably will end up with 6x6, the side walls will be 10 ft, hopefully with the clear span trusses that will give enough room later for the 2 post lift that I would love to have.

My barn is 28X34 and my 6X6 uprights are 8' centers, and only 8 foot tall walls.

If he uses laminated beams the lumber yard will probably charge him 10k more and come stick little M's on both ends of the building. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Cattoon,
Since you are in the discover and design stage, what are you going to use your barn for? IMO an 8ft height even on the wall side is a little small for a barn of this size. I would consider 10-12ft wall heights to be what a barn or a shop where you may have tractors and trucks or for that matter wood working needs. If it is for say hay storage I would look at 16 ft walls. This is a very important decision and now is when you must make it. This has a bearing, of course, on the size of the post you use. I have not check on the availablity of power poles in a long time but we used them for pole barns that we stored hay in. So I have no idea of their availability or cost now days. There are many Ag, Colleges with barn plans available. Give Google a job of finding them. Here is one: http://www.bae.uky.edu/ext/HayStorage/#Barn This looks to be a very good site with all sort of information. Check with your County Extension Office also.

em14 I plan on using this building for a garage/shop, will have a woodworking area, also gonna have an area for metalwork. I planned for 10 ft sidewalls at minimum, putting in a 16x24 "office" type area for reloading equipment, room for fishing rod racks, esssentially looking for plenty of room to work and want to move up from the shade tree I'm used to, planning on a 15x50 boat shed off of one side with a gravel floor after I get the main building finished. I appreciate everyone's input and am looking forward to getting some pics as it progresses.

That is going to be one nice setup! I think that you are starting this out the way you need too. I had to meet the Hurricane code with the shop I just finished a few months ago and ended up having to use 14 Ga. 6 inch metal studs on 2 ft centers. Attached is a picture of the results.

Junkman,
Here are some pictures of the metal studs. I'm sorry that I did not get many detail shots. This shot was of the 10ft x 10 ft garage door openning.

em: looks like that stud buildup will last a while! pretty and shinny /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

as for snow load I guess down there you're right no worry but then there is WIND hurricane loads that are probably worse! I would think that getting th epoles down at least 4' and back filled with clay gravel mix and tamped in lifts to keep them set there... I sure wouldn't want to come back after a storm to find it was setting in the neibors yard! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
