Picture 3 This is the three 10 ft x 10 ft garage doors. The doors that were used were designed to with stand 120 mph winds ... They are not insulated in this climate.

Picture 4 This one shows the 20 ft x 30 ft open area on the west side. We encased the steel columns in PT Pine later.

Spiker,
The building code required a 115 mph Wind Load Design. I was concerned when the Hurricane Charley was heading directly for us .. but fortantely it changed direction and went way to the west of us ..
I sure hope it last a very long time! There is no wood except trim below the roof truss which are wood. The siding is Hardie Plank.

Spiker, that is exactly the plan for the posts, and luckily no shortage of hard clay, topsoil is 14-18" deep then hard clay laying over rock hopefully can get 4 ft holes without hitting solid rock, otherwise a drilling we will go, minimum of 36-40" is the target for the posts and then backfill and tamp. Em14 nothing to say but WOW that is a great looking building, did you do most of it yourself or contract it? either way it's definately one to be proud of.

Cattoon,
That would have been a bit to much for me by myself so I ended up contracting it. For example everything is screw to the metal studs, there are some what around 40-50,000 metal screws in the building. The sheetrock is 5/8" ... And it started out to be a pole construction, then we tried for wooden studs and ended up with this to meet this county's code!

How do the metal studs compare in price for material with wood? Was it more expensive labor wise as opposed to labor for wood? I like metal studs, but wood cuts faster....

Metal studs of the gauge we used increased the project by all most 30%. That is a better measure than just the cost of the material. It takes longer to attach the diagonal braces than you may think because you use a lot of screws in spec pattern. For the 14 ga. we had to use hex head screws so the drivers would get a good grip. This is the reccomendation of the fastner mfg. And they were right. This leaves a bump on the surface that doesn't appear to be a problem until you start to install the moisture board on the outside and then put the Hardie plank over it. You will end up with a wavy wall surface ... I admit it is not as noticiable as I had thought it was going to be, in fact, it is hard to see until you are right on it. Hardie told us to just cross nail at the bottom edge and that would pull it in. In most cases it did. The gypsum board we used was 5/8" and tended to flatnen out the inside walls after it was applied. I am glad that we used these metal studs .. they make a very strong structure! But yes they do cost more in labor and material ... This is basing the estimated cost of the wooden stud construction vs the steel stud cost!

Nice looking building.
I like the side entrances. Seem like most buildings have you enter on the ends.
Is a 10 foot width enough room to comfortably move through with a tractor and its implements?

   / New pole barn,long post #30
I do must of the work on tractors under the shed on the side ... it is 20' x 30' ... If I was working on larger Ag impliments I can still get them into this shed area. However, of the tractors that I have, I can get the tractors with most implements inside the building. Since the weather here has only a couple months where the temp at night may every once in a while get into the low 30's. Anything that I cannot get under cover can be worked at the front concrete pad which is 20' x 45'. The shop was not intented to support farm operations.
