New Puppy NEED help

Boy this thread got crazy and all i wanted was help in how to get a puppy to stop barking as much.:laughing:

Only my opinion, but the only thing the AKC is about now is money.

Quickest way to find a reputable breeder? One who doesn't give you the animal just because you give them the cash. They're getting harder and harder to find nowadays.

Perhaps part of my point is that we should take care of what we have now before trying to cook a dinner that no one can finish.

What I find really poor re the AKC is they don't seem to use their status and money to combat puppy mills.

I don't think it is really in the best interest of a breed to become AKC recognized. We just went through this with Leonbergers, which I think I posted about last year. Basically, the breed parent club got drug into the AKC by a minority of owners who want to be able to compete in AKC events. There have been four regional and national Leonberger annual judged events for many years without the AKC. Leonberger rescue is already seeing more dogs to show up. We've already been through the Amish and others puppy millers a couple years back before the Great Recession put a dent in disposable income.

I agree about breeders who take the time to interview and check out new puppy buyers. When we got our first Leonberger pup twelve years ago, we needed a reference from a current owner, a questionaire asking about our yard, fence, previous dogs and what became of them, vet care, time away from home, etc. Also had to sign an agreement that if we didn't keep the dog, the breeder had first rights. Then, you got on the waiting list. The breeder picked the pup from the litter for us based on our age, experience and interests.

Seemed pretty intrusive to me at the time. Used to joke with my wife about the Leonberger Dog Nazis. Now that I am more 'dog smart' about the issues I think it should be the norm.

I had to pass muster with my shelties breeder,which I think is a good thing,some assurence the pup is going to a loving home.By the way Sophie has been with me 3 weeks and is house broke and learning a few tricks!Proud pappaDave

After working with animals and people for some time now, I've found that usually the problems aren't on the animals end.

Our neighbors are going on their third dog in three years.

Doing "rescue" work, don't even get me going on the Humane Society of the United States.

So far the puppy (sugar as my daughter named her and the other one spice) is starting to do better.Kids have been playing with them and she seems to be barking less. (still quite a bit tho) I think she is starting to get used to the new home and is going to be ok. Thanks everyone for thier advice and i will keep u updated on her progress.:thumbsup:

Yep. Misplaced priorities. I am not sure how the AKC is internally organized, but I have the impression it would be very difficult for a grass roots effort within the AKC to alter the AKC's mission.
