New TC25D Falling Apart and I\'m Angry

I make my living managing technical support for a school at a Midwestern university. I'm the manager rather than the worker-bee because over the years I've learned to ensure top service and put on a calm and pleasant face pretty much no matter the magnitude of an issue or how unreasonable a client might be. Honestly, it takes something extraordinary to make me lose my cool, and today that happened. Caution, a vent follows:

My neighbor has an old Craftsman riding mower and 5 acres of land similar to my three. Today was the second time in a row that he finished more than an hour sooner than I did with my $18,500 tractor. How could this be? Because of the time I had to spend (again) putting the belt back on the MMM. Not once, mind you, but TWICE, having to undo and redo the gearbox both times.

As if that wasn't enough, when I finished mowing and tried to raise the deck, only the right side of the deck went up. I got off the tractor to look, and what did I see? The left large black spring from the MMM hanging down, the entire tension rod assembly hanging down and horribly mangled, and judging by the looks of the other side, a pin, washer, and collar missing. Heaven only knows how much damage has been done beyond what I could see.

Now add all this to existing issues:

1. front axle fitting still leaks, even after I tried to tighten it.
2. The tractor still occasionally and unpredictably goes into fits of high and low rpms before stalling and refusing to start for the next half- to full hour.
3. It has thrown two blades
4. The manuals weren't delivered until weeks after I got the tractor, and the repair manual, for which I paid, has never been delivered.
5. Bucket hooks, promised as part of the setup, were not installed and have never been shipped.
6. When delivered, the tractor - which was sold to me as NEW, had clear signs of having been used. For instance, dozens of paint chips, down to metal, on the FEL; the draw bar had clearly had a ball attached and removed (paint gone and rusty) and the arms of the 3PH and the top link had many dings that were rusting. All I asked of the dealer to square this away were a can of blue and a can of grey paint. Promised, never delivered.
7. As part of the deal, the dealer promised to send me an extra front FEL guard to use in place of a grille guard when the FEL is off. Never delivered.

I now have a 30-hour tractor that I cannot use until it is repaired. My neighbor, as understanding as he is, shakes his head as he passes me on his $1995 Sears special. I'm embarrassed about that, and jumpin' out of my skin angry about the shoddy assembly and performance of my TC25D.

The dealer is ... in Virginia. I am in a Chicago suburb. The closest dealer wants $150 to transport for the warranty work. He doesn't know about the MMM mount failure yet - I don't know whether he'll fix that under warranty or not. The way things have gone with this tractor, I expect he'll charge me for the repair.

Anybody have any thoughts? Suggestions? Do I need to contact NH? I gotta tell ya - the way I feel right now, I will never, ever buy a New Holland product again, and I would sell this tractor to the first person who offered the going price for a slightly used lemon.

I am *SO* angry!

Jim

Contact the New Holland customer assistance number in the back of your owners manual..Have the person you are talking with give you there email address and forward this post to them I expect it will get the needed results. This may take a day or two but with all the thousands of people looking at this sight they will want to take care of things.

I have always sold things that kept me working more on them than with them. I have went through some trucks like that and a tractor and am glad I never looked back, life is just to short for the aggravation. Besides, there are too many nice tractors out there to be w/a lemon...good luck in your quandary.

Re: New TC25D Falling Apart and I\'m Angry

Jim, I can't offer you much, except sympathy. I know how it feels to have an expensive machine which breaks for seemingly no reason except bad design (Did you ever check out my hydro pedal post about how I ended up nearly disassembling my tractor to fix a simple problem?). Clearly, it would have been better if you had chosen a dealer closer to you. I know how embarrassing it must be when your neighbor looks your way with a grin. I had several neighbors look at my tractor and question its worth while it was broken. Of course, they also like it when it's fixed, because I do things with it that they could not possibly do with a riding mower, like spreading gravel, pushing brush, etc., etc.. I hope you get all problems fixed soon.

Re: New TC25D Falling Apart and I\'m Angry

Sorry to hear about your newest problem Jim. I just had a bit of a scare too. The gearbox mounts for my MMM came loose. I'm not sure if they didn't tighten them or the worked loose. I put lockwashers on them. I agree with Spencer200. There is no reason why New Holland should allow this to continue. I'd defintely give them a chance to help you. They may contact the dealer for you. If so you should see action. Kent

Jinman:

Just to clarify on the neighbor ... he is a goog guy, and it is not a grin that he wears on his face as he rides by shaking his head, it is a grimace - a show of sympathy. I'm not sure which would be worse though.

I'm going to take Spencer's advice and call/email this post to a rep tomorrow. I have roughly two weeks before growth at Valhalla gets out of control - let's hope there's resolution before then.

Regards,

Jim

Re: New TC25D Falling Apart and I\'m Angry

Jim--

First, it's time to check Illinois's consumer protection laws, although if you bought and took delivery in Virginia you may need to handle it there. Second, if the hour meter was rolled back to zero and the machine was clearly used when the machine was sold to you as new, then you may have some additional leverage with NH--smacks of fraud on the part of the dealer, and NH should both be informed and take action to make the situation right. I was fortunate enough to need no warranty or other work on my 33D up to my current 20 months/140 hours, including on the belly mower, so NH can do it right when they want. This board seems like the 21st-century equivalent of the guy walking up and down in front of a dealership with a "lemon" sign . . . I'd sure let the NH zone rep (or whatever the equivalent is) know that you've got a bunch of fellow travelers monitoring your situation, and their response to _all_ your problems, with bated breath. Good luck.

Re: New TC25D Falling Apart and I\'m Angry

Rick:

Thanks for the post. When it rolled off the truck, it had 4.3 hours on it. That little bit of time could have been demo time or lease/rental time. The former, well ... that's fair game. The latter, that's another story altogether. Either way, 4 hours in the scheme of things is nothing to me. There is now way to tell how those hours and the accompanying wear got on the tractor. It is the way the dealer did not follow up with his promises that really gets my goat. Now, at thirty hours and all this evidence of shoddy assembly and preparation, and a situation in which the tractor is literally out of commission until it is repaired - well, this is just plain unacceptable.

I will see what the rep says tomorrow, and hope for (and expect!) the best.

Regards,

Jim

Progress Report:

I spoke with a customer service representative yesterday at about 3 p.m. She would not give me her email address, but assigned me a case number and directed me to send my issues to comments@newholland.com. She assured me that the issues would be read in a timely manner, and that she or someone would get back to me. I did that promptly. It is now a day later, and no reply. I will hope for contact tomorrow.

Re: New TC25D Falling Apart and I\'m Angry

webbmeister,

I am sorry you have had trouble with your new machine.
However, this is not representitve of NH products.
It sounds like the dealer is the problem.

I have a NH and my dealer is fantastic. When my new machine was making a strange noise they drove out to my place (almost an hour) fixed it on the spot (lose belt) and drove away (another hours drive). Cost = zero.

Be persistent with NH. I bet they will make it right.
