I'll be sure to wear my John Deere hat when they deliver it so they don't forget to give me a blue hat.

I got to spend some time on it before taking off for the Easter weekend. I have 3 hours on it now.... with many more soon to come.

I love it so far, it's been able to do everything I've asked of it. I'm glad I went with the bigger tractor instead of a smaller compact. Compared to the JD 4020 I'm used to operating this seems like a "toy" tractor. It'll definitely handle better when I add the rear ballast, I have to use 4wd going over rough terrain due to lack of weight on the rear end, even with what I consider a 1/2 full bucket. The dealer hasn't loaded the rear tires yet either, they're picking it up later this week to do that, install the rear hydraulics, and run the lines for the grapple bucket.

Instead of going on for paragraphs about everything I love on the tractor, I'll just list a few of the complaints/head stratchers I've run into so far to see if you guys have any suggestions.

1) Parking brake - Ok, it beeps at me if I try to get off without setting the parking brake, but the parking brake takes two appendages to engage. If I'm supposed to set it everytime I hop off the tractor, it should be easier to use, like an automotive style parking brake.

2) Seat pressure switch - Transmission goes into neutral evertime I stand up, or if it's already in neutral it requires me to press the clutch pedal to reset it. Since I stand up often to help see what I'm doing with the bucket, it's getting quite annoying. I see some electrical work in my future.

3) Clutch peal - or "inching pedal" as they call it has a very jerky engagement. Makes "inching" almost impossible. I've found the direction lever works better when trying to make small adjustments to position.

4) Rear diff lock - How does it work? I don't feel an engagment click, though it seems to work. Is it an actual mechanical lock or does the pedal just put some force through clutch packs?

5) Bucket cycle times - seem slow compared to my dad's 4020, but seemed typical for the compact tractors I looked at.

6) Gearing - It would be much more user friendly if there was wider spacing between the 4 synchronized gears. I find myself switching between L and M a lot, with wider gear spacing I could pick one range and leave it. Really makes me appreciate the Powershift on the 4020.

I can't wait to start mowing with it. I imagine it'll be much nicer than the A-C WD-45 that I used last summer.

1 The presence alarm will go off if the brake is not set when off the seat.Look in the owner's manual the is a chart when this alarm work's
2 If you look at the right arm of the loader there is a level indicator rod that is what i use to see that my bucket is level. Kind of a manual return to dig.
3 Ask the dealer to see if it is adjusted right mine make's a sudden jerk when clutching from time to time.
4 When engaged it has to be in a pull or slipping situation then it will lock in when the pedal is held.It will stay engaged untill the tractor is relived from the pull or tire spin.
5 Check the book on cycle time's it is alittle slower the the tc40 i had.

I did notice the transmission going into neutral when standing up off of the seat .I dont think i would stand going down a hill with a wagon load of hay.

You will like it when you get your tire's fluid it make's all the differance on this tractor.

Congrat's on your 55 how many hat's did ya get

I test drove a 55 ehss today and was impressed and disappointed.
PLENTY of power. FEL (empty) cycled like lightning! Absolutely faster than I need, being a novice. Had to drive 3 hrs. past 8-9 NH dealers to get to one in La Grange Texas. Very peppy overall.
Not as user friendly as Kub 5740. The Kub stops on a dime even with throttle at 2000rpm by either clutching of letting off petal. The 55 in 4wd stalls easily, esp with FEL operating. This was probably operator error. 55 felt beefier than 5740. Clutching for gear change and not for direction took a little time. Dealer doesn't load tires and only has Woods cutters. (In his defense he is a small dealer)
1. Wonder if dealers near San Antonio will service (esp. warranty) if I purchase 200 mi away?
2. 5740 seemed safer and more "user friendly" to a new operater. Anyone else driven both?
3. Price difference $3000ish! NH 2.9% 96 months is a deal. Can the 5740 be worth that much more?

Wife, son(23), daughter and son-in-law will all want to operate. Main use: Shreading, tilling., LIGHT discing, 3 new ponds and grass to maintain,
Roads, looking at Roadmaster 6' blade. Liked the looks of Modern 7' preditor at another dealer, but considering Rino TW72. With loaded tires, wonder if 55 will pull 7' vs. 6? Have conflicting opinions from dealers there.
Plan to test a JD4720 before final decision, if I can locate one near me. Same problem with NH55. 6 JD dealers and ONE 45w\cab is all I can find to test!
ALL comments appreciated. Be gently...my first post and purchase.
Thanks

sounds like youve done your homework and have been hitting the trail pretty hard! i would honestly say go with the tractor you feel most comfortable with overall(safety wise, efficiency for what you need it for, price you can live with). i say this because who better to teach the other members of your family you mentioned to operate the tractor then you! welcome to TBN and keep us posted on your search and ask any questions youd like.

You cant beat the deals of the TC55D with 2.9% for 8 years you will save thousands if you have to finance. My dealer just talked to NH in Georgia and they have about 150 --TC55DA's left down there and thats why they extended the good deals. YOu can really get a good deal on one.

You cant go by 10 minutes of driving around or however long you tested it. it will take a few hours to get the handle on how it operates and then it will be safe to drive once you know how.

I drove mine today for the first time even though its not delivered yet and I loved it. i got the feel of it pretty quick and I know after a couple hours it will be piece of cake. i found myself wanting to push that clutch it more then i needed to but will kick that habit quick. I will be doing some electrical work as well because i get off the seat a-lot and wont be messing with brake or clutch if i dont want to. First thing i did with my TC33d was bypass the seat switch and will do the same here. It had the backhoe(759c) on it and it looked awsome. No pictures yet since they havent cleaned it yet and i didnt have camera either.

Cargun, regarding the differential lock - you need to keep your heel on the lock pedal to keep it engaged. It really does help - I used it a few times the other day while pulling logs out of the woods. Like most diff-locks it gives you the extra little bit of momentary traction to get going again.

On a semi-related note when dealing with poor traction conditions relating to snow, you will also quickly learn to appreciate the individual break pedals for turning in snow (slowly of course).

ahvasta, regarding the Deere 4720 comp: I was close to buying a 4x20 series machine - nice/real nice.... but in the end the financing deal on the Tc55DA was too good to pass. (7.49% compared to 2.9%) But the Boomer does have a few nice features that do not come standard on the Deere - check out the TC55 3PH gear - all the flexible/telescopic/adjustable features (not to mention the fact that it's a Catagory 2 hitch). The toolbox, 12volt charger, the "industry standard" quick attach (skid steer) style bucket, etc...

I'd be proud to have a 4720 in my yard, but I have no regrets with the Boomer :)
