Yanmar 1720D
Hey guys been watching this site petty hard for the last month as I have been tractor shopping. Today I bought a really nice Yanmar 1720D with a 4ft bush hog. 1180 hrs, has got the full dash with all the gauges, a hyd tilt on the 3 pt, powershift trans. I have learned so much already from search and reading tons of topics. If anyone has any words of advise I would gladly take it. I am not new to tractors but I am new to Yanmars. I have had a old Ford 8N and a Tafe 2700, plus I spend almost all my days sitting in a Volvo L90E cab loader for work. :D

I plan to service everything when I get it on monday, oil and filter, hyd filter, screen and fluid, fuel filter.
Thanks in advance
Bill

I had a 1720d a few years back. I loved it. It was incredible of fuel and was powerful. I pulled a 5ft bush hog with it just fine.

I loved the creeper gear for tilling.

Enjoy the tractor.

I dont doubt you did but others have to know that this varies upon your field conditions as well as how often you cut. I have a ym2000, which has 3 more pto hp than a 1702 and there is no way that 75% of the time i could run a 5 ft hog. i am just way to loaded up with my 4fter cutting my fields to have a bigger cutter esp in the thick spots. I just cut 2-3x per year so this may be different than someone who cuts every 4 weeks.

Well said. I never let the fields get really high. It really came down to the price on the 5ft'er. I jut couldn't pass up the deal.

I will be cutting some pretty rough stuff with it. I have just acquired 10 acres and it is unkept and needs alot of mowing and clean up. It will have its work cut out for it! Thats why I felt the 4ft mower was a better choice for it for now.

Thanks for welcoming me, its nice to have somewhere to turn to get help and insight on things and I am happy to share my experiences for others also.

A good rule of thumb 4hp. Pto per foot of Imp. or 5eng. Hp. The 1720 I believe is 19Hp.Eng. Call me Old school. But 99% of the time it's almost always better to have a liitle more Hp. than just Not Enough :laughing:

1702 your gonna be much happier with the 4fter. If your place has grown 1 year at least if not more there is no way you can cut it with the 5 fter unless your in low one or 2 or maybe 3 gear. anything on the high side will probly stall it out. Like i said i have 3 more ptohp than you and when i cut my fields i could probly only get by on about half of the acerage with a 5fter and i cut 2-3x per season. that first pass would be the doosy with a 5fter after that you can always just adjust to the grass and only put 4ft of it in the tall stuff when needed. But you made the right choice i think you would not be able to use the last foot during any of the work you will be doing right now.
