Lots of Ford 3000 were used in tobacco in my part of the world. As has been said solid tractors. As to tach, you have a gasoline engine. You may can find an electric tach that works off of picking up spark to a plug. Would need to be able to be set to match number of cylinders you have.
If you will be using a sprayer that can be good so you can come back to same rpms to get same pressure and ground spped and thus same coverage.

So, here is the latest. I got a Zenith carb to replace the troublesome Holley from Farmers Service Inc. As I was doing this I decided to go ahead and replace the points and condenser while I was in there. There was 1 screw holding the condenser that I couldn't get to so I pulled the distributor. Installed points and condenser on the bench and set the gap. All was good. Reinstalled dist, put gas back in the tank. Oh, I bypassed the miles of factory fuel line and fuel pump and just ran a 5/16" line with inline filter from petcock to carb. Not sure why all the original lines are necessary...... Anyway, she fired up and was still running rough. While playing with the timing it seemed as though I was a tooth or so off on the distributor. Pulled it up, rotated and when I tried to start the tractor, I could smell gas fumes from the exhaust. Tractor wouldn't start. Carb was leaking from the 'lead' plug on the bottom. So, I was basically trying to get the timing right while the carb was flooding the engine. At this time I need to find TDC and install the distributor pointing at the number 1 plug wire on the cap. Could a stuck float cause this? Could shipping have caused the float to bind? I'm tempted to put the Holley back on so I can get this thing running again......

And somewhere along the way the other lower lift ball disappeared...... Now I need both........

you bypassed all the fuel routing and lost a fuel pump and filtration.. and yeah.. carb may have got something in it from shipping.

IMHO.. pulling the dizzy to repalce points was a bad call.

forget the 3pt till you have a running tractor...

The 3pt is the last of my concerns. Yes, I bypassed the fuel pump along with several redundant filters. This tractor doesn't need one. Gravity fed will work. And I do have an inline filter in place. Pulling the dizzy was the only way to get a mangled screw out. I have pulled many dizzies in my day. I have rebuilt several engines, etc. What I missed was the fact the carb was flooding the engine while I was messing with the dist. So, the main question I have for those with experience with the Zenith carb is. "would a stuck float cause leakage from the 'plug' on the bottom"?

Yes. Or a dirty needle/seat since you messed with all the feed lines.

Once again, there is a brand new, straight from the packaging inline fuel filter attached to brand new straight from the packaging 5/16" fuel line. going directly from petcock to carb. I highly doubt any dirt entered the system because I "messed with all the feed lines".

Hmm.. slightly rude answer? hmm..

I'll let you figure it all out..

Please explain what was rude. I honestly don't see it.

You went on about how many distributors you have pulled in defense of the fact that you couldn't pull this one and get it back right.

Then when I suggested a dirty system you set me straight that everything was new. Did you clean everything before you installed it or just take it out of the box and install??

I understand your frustration but it does no good to take shots at the messenger. :)
