New to me house with 3 acre pasture in front...found a deep, deep skinny hole! Ideas?

I have a new to me pasture in front of the house that slopes down to the road. It is about 3 acres. I was walking around inspecting it and found a very deep hole filled with water. The hole was about 10" diameter but very, very deep. I have never seen anything like it. I did not want to push to hard with my hoe handle fearing of breaking a pipe or something. I know the county rural water goes up to the house, so I will contact them about it. I can't tell if water is from a pipe or from filling by the heavy rains...

Any thoughts?

It looks like an old dug well to me.

Just in case it's a sink hole always tie off with an anchor away from the hole... like 50 feet. Then probe the hole with several lengths of PVC pipe and couplings. Increase your caution for every ten feet of depth.

Tie a heavy sinker on your fishing rod and drop it in to measure dept.

Barricade it so no one or animal falls into it, really break a leg or worse. The casing indicates an old well casing.

Where did he mention a casing? I’d just fill the hole up with rocks and if it sinks again I’d deal with that later.

Look at the video. Sure looks like a steel casing sticking a little above grade. Ron

I suspect an abandoned well that was once filled with dirt which has now settled.

Hello gentlemen. I am leaning toward the well idea. That makes a lot of sense. I am thinking of building a sturdy steel framed plug or cap to cover it as a temporary solution.

We are thinking of converting that part of the front pasture to forest land as we live on a busy road and having trees there might reduce traffic noise and give me some peace in my old age!

I did not see any steel...the steel you probably saw was the top of my hoe, was using the handle as a probe.

When you were probing it with that hoe did you tap the sides to see if they were cement, metal or dirt?

I think it was just dirt!? I don't remember any cement or metal...but I will check again tomorrow...

It screams field tile stealing dirt to me. You get a field tile, a lot of older ones were clay, they get a bad joint, and as water flows through it the dirt gets sucked away. You can dig down and repair it or just fill it in. A tile probe would let you know for sure.

Bought my house 20 years ago. The septic tank leach field had plastic tubes sticking up out of the ground; nobody could tell me why. In addition, the drainage from my leach field extends about 200’ from the field itself.

So.....a remote possibility is that it has something to do with a leach field (assuming you’re on a septic system).

Before messing around it much I would heed another poster's suggestion that you tie off to something for safety. Some of the old dug wells went pretty deep into the ground, widening as they went. After a while the sides get unstable and can collapse.
