New to me house with 3 acre pasture in front...found a deep, deep skinny hole! Ideas?

I fill up holes like that all the time. Nearly 30 years ago, I had a lot of trees cut, then sheared the stumps. Now, as the stumps rot out and cave in, I have holes.

I agree. If it is deep and the water table is that high then you have an bonus well. Use it to water gardens and lawn. You may be able to tap into it as a ground source heatpump - free energy source.
If it was septic related, I expect your nose would have warned you! The previous owner should be able to tell you.

Looks like a septic drain to me. The one at my country house doesn't go straight down, but the water coming out is clear and has no odor.

Same here....no odors from my leach field drains.

It screams field tile stealing dirt to me. You get a field tile, a lot of older ones were clay, they get a bad joint, and as water flows through it the dirt gets sucked away. You can dig down and repair it or just fill it in. A tile probe would let you know for sure.

Bought my house 20 years ago. The septic tank leach field had plastic tubes sticking up out of the ground; nobody could tell me why. In addition, the drainage from my leach field extends about 200’ from the field itself.

So.....a remote possibility is that it has something to do with a leach field (assuming you’re on a septic system).

I agree, it's most likely a broken clay tile or old tree stump.

I had a hole just like that about 10 years ago. I did the hoe handle measurement and also found no bottom. So I loaded the bed of my JD Gator half full with soil from an old fence line to put down the hole.

The next year the hole came back with a vengeance. So I got a full Gator bed load of soil from the old fence row and dumped down the hole. After a couple of summer months and rains, I added another half load to fill it and made a small mound for some settling for it to level off. That was several years ago and now it is forming a slight depression, but no hole yet.

I have another depression/hole beginning about 100 feet up hill from that old hole now. This hole will be easier to deal with because I have a tractor/loader now. The first time around it was all shovel work.

My suggestion is to find your plot plan for the property and see if there are any clues from that. If you don't have it, then talk to the county records folks for a copy. It can also be found in any deed/purchasing records you should have.

Find your property on Google Earth. There is a feature on Google Earth where you can look back in time at satellite views. Most views go back about 30 years or so. You may see something back in time that will give you a clue as to what is, or was, there.

For 'safety' I'd assemble two pallets, in an inverted 'V', over the hole location.

So far all we know it is circular hole in the ground with at least four feet of water in it. To get a better idea there needs to be a little excavation on site to further see what is there.

In any case it should be covered and flagged. Maybe even fenced.

Hi all...thanks for all of the input. The water receded significantly and I stuck a longer handled tool down there and (think??!) I found the bottom. The area is a low spot at the bottom of the the hill and I suppose moisture builds up there and the soil washed out there...strange that it is a nice round hole though! Area is now marked and protected.
