It ain't a tractor but still just as much needed and appreciated. I finally bought my first BRAND NEW truck. Since some of you guys are as loyal and as full of suggestions as the morning coffee fella's I had to spread the news. Just this afternoon I got a black 2004 F-150 XLT 4x4, reg. cab stepside w/4.6L V-8 and auto. trans. I researched them forever and they sure are one solid built machine. I was looking at the Supercabs w/5.4L V-8's but for the extra 5k I can buy all sorts of other toys and I'm sure I'll get suggestions of what I could buy. I know this will pull my MF 135 just fine which is about the heaviset thing I'll tow except firewood (trailer only). I let my sister drive it today (me in it of course) and I got onto her because she took off too fast and stopped too quick (women drivers). My mom likes it too and my dad was my salesman so of course he is happy. But the most important thing is that my bird dog liked it, gotta take care of your priorities, an unhappy birddog can make for a bad hunting season. I have no wife to comment on the purchase, probably why I could afford it right? Nothing super special about it except that it is my first NEW vehicle and the fact that I was able to buy it myself (I'm 24 years old). I sure am happy about it too. By the way, I did not let the dog mark it as his.

Congrats. on your New Toy.. I hope it will serve you well.. I Bought my first new truck when I was 22.. And still remember how excited I felt. Mine also was a F150 but had a 3 speed on the column, 6 cylinder, no power steering and no air... I was just as proud as if it were a caddy.. The year was 1976 drive away price $4250..I put 175000 miles on it when I sold it for $2500.. Hope yours will be as dependable.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I, too, was 22 years old when I bought my first showroom new vehicle; a '62 Austin Healey Sprite. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I didn't get a truck of any kind until I was 29, when I bought a brand new '69 Chevy; literally the cheapest one they made; no radio, not even a cigarette lighter. It did come with two "options" a rear bumper and a spare tire (how many remember when those were "optional" items?). /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif And it was a "clearance" sale after the '70 models had come out, so it cost me $1948. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

O.K., Birdhunter, you used the words "bird dog" and "truck" in the same paragraph so now you have my undivided attention. I now know about your truck, but what I want to know is what kind of dog do you have and what kind of hunting you do. I'm a duck hunter myself, with some stocked pheasant for good measure. My Chesapeake, Jake, came from a breeder in East Greeneville and is an excellent all around dog. Not all Chessies are like that, and I consider myself lucky.
Anyway, I've been curious about those new F-150's. They look awesome and I hope you update us on its performance.
By the way, feel free to PM me about hunting -- for me the rest of the year is just waiting for the seasons to come around. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Aw you should have bought a.... LOL no brand wars here! Congratulations on your purchase. I've still never bought a new one, just always a couple of years old or older with mostly good results. I did make a bad deal once on a 92 F150 that lost the trans at only 75,000. I guess the old owner wasn't so good to it!
Keep us posted on how it's doing for you, especially towing! Thanks, John

HEY BIRD : another member who remembers when trucks were less expensive than cars. back then a truck was at the low end of the pecking order. trucks were for farmers the same as blue jeans. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I bought a new F150 Crew Cab last fall. October that is. I now have 29,182 miles on it. I just love it. Major difference from my 2001 F150 Crew to the new styles. Much more HP and a lot more stable. Wasn't sure I was going to get another F150 based on my last one but this one sure changed my mind back to Ford.

Familyman:
My dog is a male Brittany that will be three in August and this will be his fourth season afield. The first year he was a tag-along and by the end of the day he would end up in the back of my hunting vest because he couldn't keep up anymore. My dad and I together have four dogs, my male and his three females. 1 is the momma dog to the other two which are pups from our first litter from my dog and his. The two younger dogs (2 years this August) work well with their dad in the field. They are a hell of a team and let very little pass by, they are blocky headed stocky dogs and there is not a brush pile to thick for them to dive into either. Mainly the hutning we do is quail, I am also a guide at a shooting preserve about twenty miles North of Cape Girardeau, MO on the Illinois side and there we release quail, pheasants and chukars. The only dog I guide with is my male because he has the best obedience and he's the best solo hunter. The two younger females are good too but when someone is paying for a hunt you don't want then to have to deal with a dog that is hard headed or has bad tendencies once in a while. Reason being they are still pups, I do guide with them sometimes if it is someone I have dealt with for a long time and I know that they uinderstand that part of hunting with dogs is that sometimes the dog makes mistakes. As a guide I have become well aquainted with most of our local IL dept. of Natural Resources Officers. Guidin here has been a very rewarding experience for me, it gets my dog some excelent experience and I can cover dog food and shotgun shell expenses most of hunting season. The downside is that you don't carry a gun, (I have with repeat people that ask me to hunt with them instead of guide them) and also you may get a group of guys that can't hit anything at all and the dog gets very frustrated as well as me. But it does keep me outdoors through season and around birddogs, you learn alot even if you amy know alot and the time spent afield with the dog is like quality time with a child. The dog seems to have a great working relationship with me and it makes me more attuned to when he gets the least little bit birdy.

In regards to the truck and the new things you wouldn't know till you look closely at them: First off the reg. cab has four doors. Instead of a solid column behind where the door would shut (the area wheer the cab corner rusts out on older pickups) there ios a door that opens out to access behind the seat. There is enough room behind the seat I can fit my lunch box that is 10" wide and it will slide from side to side. Lots of room for tools, guns etc. Second the tailgate will seem very light when it shuts. This is because the tailgate has a torsion spring attached to the hinges running towards the top of the gate that assists in closing. Not enough spring to llift itself but my 9 year old nephew can close it one handed from standing on the ground (he can't reach the top of the tailgate from the ground). Thirdly, picture the setup of your rear shocks, on pre-2004 Fords, all GM and Dodge they are mounted fromthe axle to the frame inside the frame rails. On teh 2004 F-150's they are mounted the same but they are mounted outside the frame rails. Think about this for a minute, what are the purpose of shocks and how does the concept of leverage apply. Fourth, the frame is fully boxed from front to back, not a channel like older trucks or most newer ones, this is very rigid. Also frame cross members and such pass through the frame and are welded on each side no rivets to loosen up or allow frame to bend from flexing. I haven't had time to crawl underneath and view it yet so I don't know much of underneath. Fifith, the seats are new both in fabric and design, very comfortable and they look very durable like they won't wear bad. The tailgate locks many others might I don't know for sure. The truck has good accelration, of course I'm use too my previous two trucks performance, one being the late 1984 F-150 4x4 (stepside and complete renewal in '98) w/ 300ci. 6-cylinder w/C-6 auto (dependable as can be and awesome lugging engine for farm work but not a run away from you engine) and then the truck I traded in a '96 Ranger supercab 4x2 w/ 3.0 v-6 5 speed man. trans. good little truck for its purpose (to put a lot of miles on, get through college and get great gas mpg's, and haul birddogs around So. IL & tri-state area).
By the way my truck has turned many heads in the 36 hours I've owned it and one guy at Wal-Mart thought I was a salesman the way I was showing him around the truck when he asked to look at it. I told him my dad was but I was just a happy knowledgeable new owner. Besides my newest shotgun (Beretta AL 391 urika 20 ga. w/ 28" bbl) this is the first major purchase that I knew the product from one end to the other and could quote the specs and brochure.
I'll try to get some pictires taken and uploaded sometime this week, and I'll show every detail.

Looking on the Ford website tonight I found the performance specs. My truck has the 4.6L V-8 w 3.55 rear end ratio, this truck is rated to pull 6200 lbs. The engine peak HP is 231 @ 4750 rpm, the peak torque is 293 lb.-ft. @ 3500 rpm. Using the formula [Torque=(HP x 5252)/rated hp rpm ] I found that at peak hp the engine is cranking out 255 lb.-ft. torque, mathematically reversing the forumla I found that at peak torque the engine has 195 HP. I have yet to feel what this is, I have been real eay on the truck and I don't think I have even gone over 3000 rpm yet. I do know that you can do 75 mph and feel like you're doing 40mph. I'm surprised I haven't got a speeding ticket yet. At 55 mph I'm running about 1500 rpm, 70 mph just under 2000 rpm, 75 mph right at 2000 rpm. The last st. I must travel before I get out of town on the way home is a 25 mph speed limit and I dern near have to ride the break to be legal, it wants to go. The truck also has 4-wheel disc brakes standard.

Ah, huntin'!
Man, I envy you! New truck and guide bird hunters all seaon? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Enjoy it while you're young -- once a wife and little ones appear your time is given mostly to family whether directly or in finding more and better ways to support them. Best of luck to you, and if I ever find myself heading out your way I'll look you up to schedule a hunt. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I work midnights in a power plant, the guiding thing is more for fun than for income. The only bad thing is I can guarantee that an otherwise good birddog will want to see what's in the back of my truck and whenhe does he'll leave his paw prints and scratch marks. Or I'll throw a large stone out of the treads and leave a good ding. I guess it has to happen someway and somehow, it may as well happen when I'm hunting and enjoying myself.

Congratulations, Birdhunter on your new truck! It's a great feeling to buy that first new vehicle. Day before yesterday, I did the same thing....traded in my 2000 F150 for a new 2004 model....supercab XLT with the 4.6L V-8. I do notice the difference in power since my 2000 model had the 5.4L. But the ride, wow!!! My son came over last night (your age), drooling over it. He tells me that the outboard mounted shocks make all the difference. Have fun and stay safe with your new toy!

Congrats on the new truck. My father-in-law has the F150 King Ranch, and man is that thing sexy! I couldn't afford such a vehicle, but I wouldn't trade my Tacoma for anything. Enjoy that pick-up, you'll love it!

Yep, I can remember when my Dad bought his only new truck, a 1977 Ford F150 (auto trans and radio as options), and the bumper was extra. Don't think the spare tire was extra, though. My mother was really confused, because she thought trucks ought to come with rear bumpers -- after all, cars came that way!

We kept the F150 in the family for about 15 years before I sold it to a co-worker. Not only was it a good truck, but it was a great remembrance for us, because my Dad passed away shortly after the purchase. Keeping it in the family was a good reminder of him.

The F150 is still out in Leavenworth county working as a non-licensed farm truck.

And here I am at fifty years old and in the truck business yet I've NEVER bought a brand new truck for personal use. I did order a new Ford Thunderbird years ago and that was the only new vehicle purchased for me. I sold it the ninth month Ii owned it.

I'm happy to trade the first 20,000 miles or so in exchange for paying half price. I don't know if I'm right or wrong. It's just what I've always done when I wanted a 'new' vehicle.

If you are a truck dealer, you probably just get to drive them without buying one. I wouldn't buy one either. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had to get my 95 F350 crew cab new. Problem was, around here at least, the one ton crew cabs were scarce, and everyone demanded premium prices to the extent that used cost nearly as much as new. I voted on new, got the few options I wanted, and got it direct from the factory. All the lot models had way too many extra options for my pocket book at the time. Have been very happy with it and would do it again. I will probably check the used market again, first, and go from there when I need its replacement.
