Deere 790 MFWD
Does anyone have a strong opinion on the Deere 2210, 790, or 4115 they would like to share? I am deciding between the 3 of them, and I plan to buy green. I am worried about underbuying.

I have 6 acres, probably 3 of it wooded with pine and hard woods, and am in the market for a new, multipurpose subcompact tractor. I have an LT160 lawn tractor that I figure I'll keep to finish mow with around the home and the initial yard.

I am looking for a subCUT or CUT for handy work around the house. I had considered the Deere 2210 originally, but the dealer has also mentioned the 790 and the 4115 to me, if finish mowing isn't going to be the primary funciton.

It is a new home, so there is lots to be done 'scaping-wise as well as general maintenance of the property. I plan to have a vegetable garden, am interested in clearing out some of the woodland, have a long 700ft gravel driveway that will require maintainance, and other chores no doubt.

I had even thought the 2210 might be too small over time, and I'd be better suited to moving up to the Deere 4000 Ten series, but not sure. Pocketbook issues may affect that decision. The 790 seems to help allay some of the 4000 pocket book issues, but the gear shift and low spec concerns me, although performance seems solid. I do like the old nostalgic feeling of being on the 790 -- makes me feel like I'm on my granddaddy's old 40 series.

Oh, and I do hate the fact that the 2210 is essentially a Yanmar painted green (made in Japan). At least the Kubota BX is assembled in Georgia. Something about a Deere not being built here just irks me. I'm sure the 790 is built overseas, too, being so low spec. But I am willing to look past that to have a solid, reliable, multi-purpose machine.

Any pricing advice, good, too? I am being quoted $9800 for the 2210 tractor MFWD and $2400 for the 210 loader to start, with a MMM 60" for $1600. I'd like to get the dealer down around $13K total, if possible. The 790 MFWD quote is $12,000.

I'll try to post a picture of the home and type of wooded property surrounding it.

I was at the JD dealer this morning to buy some supplies for my 4310 and had a chance to look at the 2210's up close for the first and was amazed how small they are.

Although I have less acreage than you and I do not use the 4310 to cut grass, I needed something larger than a sub CUT. I liked the 790, but my final decision came between a 990 and the 4310. The 4310 will take a reasonable size backhoe and still is small enough to get into cramped situations.

Although I absolutely love the 4310, I still think that the 990 would have suited me just fine. The 790 would have been the lowest horsepower I would have considered. All the other tractors you mentioned would have been too small for me.

Good luck

Richard

There will be others with direct experience and more knowledge- but given that I'm in simlar situation and have been looking at other machines I'll throw in my thoughts. I was initially planning on buying a 2210 and have decided it's too small and if you're gonna be skidding some trees etc- I'd go with the larger machines. The 2210 offers a lot in a small package. The 790 is a lot of machine (but will be more $ if you need 4WD) and if your happy without a hydro that's likely what I would buy. I don't think the 790 comes standard with a mid PTO either- if snowblowing or other front end attatchments are needed. However, for my needs I would benefit from 4WD and think a hydro is worth the money- which puts you at the 4115- not as much power, but more bells and whistles then the 790 but significantly more in cost. You'll have to figure out what you need most, and balance from there.

I went through something along the lines of your decision last fall. Started by looking at the 2210 but found that it was too small for my needs.

I ended up purchasing a 4310 with 300CX FEL and iMatch. Have been very pleased with it for the 33 hours I have run it so far.

Looks to me like you have some rolling property there and the 4 WD sure would come in handy. I normally run in 2 WD, but moving some logs last week made me bog down. I just pushed the 4 WD button and walked away.

With the kind of money you are talking about, give this some serious thought. Spending $10,000 and then finding it is too small for your needs isn't a very good deal.

You are correct, the 4310 has a Yanmar engine made in Japan, but at least the tractor is put together in Georgia. It is hard to find anything these days that is totally built in the USA.

Good luck on finding what you need.

Personally I wouldn't go any smaller than the 790. If you can be happy with a basic not to many frills machine it will do well. If you need a few more creature comforts then you will need to go to the more pricey 10 or 20 series.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm sure I will visit the dealer several more times before I pull the trigger, but I am leaning to the 790. I tend to agree that the 2210 might be too small. And the gear shift doesn't bother me that much, as I might actually enjoy "working" the tractor. The 2210, after I test drove it, seemed so slick, I just said to myself, "White collar tractor."

Any other thoughts on the 790 or other will be much appreciated? I'm new to the forum, so I love the give and take dialogue on the tractors.

Good morning

I agree that the 790 is a great tractor and from what I have read on this forum, there seems to be a lot of 790 owners out there and only good things said about the tractor.

A suggestion would be to also look at the 990. Maybe it looks like too much tractor right now, but I find there are not too many times I have said to myself that I wish I had less horsepower. I understand that that arguement can be only taken so far, but in my case the 990 was a viable option.

Good luck

I have a 4010 bought in October for my 8.5 acres that are more hilly and about as much trees as you have. My neighbor with only 5 acres bought a 4310. He has a bush hog and rear blade. He has a gravel driveway. Mine is paved. Neighbor admits he knows nothing about tractors, having only operated a Gravely with sickle mower in the past.

So far, I've used the 4010 to move 19.5 tons of #5 gravel to cover my skinny trail through the woods (that probably won't allow my neighbor's 4310 to go). Have used a 7 chisel plow soil ripper with no power problem and recently mounted 2 16" disc hillers onto the soil ripper 2x2 bar and made rows in my garden. From this experience, I think the 4010 might be a little light for serious RB work. However, I think it would do it. You'd just have to be careful how much you push, to keep the blade from kicking it around a bit. I've used the FEL for 3 snowfalls we had this winter. Fine for that and the gravel work.

You should be able to get the 4010 for about $300 less than the 2210. However, the prices quoted on the 2210 are almost exactly what I paid for the 4010 and FEL in October (same quotes from 2 separate dealers, too).

The 4000 and 2000 series are both assembled in Georgia, too; I think. The expensive direct injection 4115 is made and assembled in Japan. My 4010 starts instantly in cold weather, IF ALLOWED TO GLOW FOR 5 SECONDS by putting the range selector in H or L with switch on "starter" before switching range selector to N.

If the 790 is MFWD got with it. It's the "old school chopper" of J.D., that's what makes it a great little tractor. If not, go with the 4115, it will do some work also.
