I would never recommend that a parent tell their children - Whatever you do, don't pursue any education or training after High School. Others may differ.
Just for the record, I was not advocating for that. My opinion and long held belief is they can earn it on their own with a computer and an internet connection.

That wasn't directed at you.

That is changing.

Yes and I've worked with some of those IBM employees. Trust me they're still going off of their name from a couple decades ago.

IBM in a lot of cases is like the Tata consulting. Indian based company that provides warm bodies and bills you a lot for them. The skills are not there.

I don't think college separates the smart from the dumb. I think it separates the people who are willing to go the extra mile.

Now I'm all for a difficult technical test that a person would have to take in order to get into a company like IBM in lieu of a college degree.

Thankfully, but it’s still the overwhelming perception of most people

There are other ways to test for and determine this.

There certainly are but I think it depends on the career field. In some cases, you either know it or you don't. As the job market gets more and more difficult to fill the technical roles you will either see that work offshored (We offshore a large percentage of our technical roles) or companies hiring entry level non degree students and putting them through a boot camp or internship.

I would much rather see them bring in kids from the US and put them through internships than to have it off-shored. That off-shore solution doesn't help our economy or young workers

Technology would be the perfect field to do this in.

I am an estate fiduciary and most of the people I am hiring are degreed adults with many years of experience. I can tell you first hand that I have interviewed many people over the years that had decades of experience in their field and didn't know anything. There are MANY in the work force that have done nothing with themselves. They coasted on the coat tails of their degree, experience, resume and the reputation of the company they work for hoping that the next boss they interview with will not be prudent enough to ask the right questions.

Unfortunately, what I have been seeing is many of these people get very skilled at B.Sing their way into jobs instead of developing the necessary skills to do the job. This makes the job of people like myself that much more difficult and time consuming because a lot of the interview is conducted in a way to screen for deception and fraud.

Yes, I'm well aware of those type and have encountered them, my wife has also. I have a saying, so you say you've been doing ______________ for 20 years? My question is, have you been doing it well for 20 years?

My wife and I both have encountered and worked with the BSer 20+ year "experienced" incompetent wind bag. It has nothing to do with a degree, she works with all women with no degree in the medical billing field. I work with all people with degrees and see the same.

I would agree with that for most things. But for some professions, it would be the unusual person who was able to force himself to learn as much and in the depth required.
