New tractor...what MUST have tools for maintenance?

While I have some HF stuff, I don't trust them with my body parts. I have broken enough tools (craftsman/snap-on/mac) to know it always hurts when they let go. Sometimes real bad. Yes jackstands fail.

What kind of jackstand did you have fail. I have a set of real old ones from onestop auto.. tube fram and tripod bottom.. 2000# rating.. I'v used the snot out of them.. all stamped and mig welded metal.. must be? 16-17 ys old.

Also got a set that is stamped body, and has a cast center adjustable section.. that is from HF. It is heavier and beefier than my other pair.. rated to 6000#.. has a 4 point bottom.. both have worked fine.. and the 6k ones have held ou at least 6k when working on my large fords... for a couple days.. and the smaller ones have held up about 1.8k-2k for weeks when I had a chassie down to strip and paint..

I think you may have just got unlucky and picked up a lemon set... that coulda happend to any manufacturer... bad product that slipped thru QC... I've seen craftsman sockets that wouldn't fit the wrench righ out o fthe pack.. and sockets milled off center.. etc... errors do happen..

A few years ago I had my 3,800 lb Allis D14 sitting up on 4 Sears jack stands rated at 4,000 lbs each. I thought the safety factor was more than enough...wrong.

As I was working on the tractor with the 4 wheels off: one of the rear tires which weigh about 200lbs gently tipped over and hit the side of the tractor. That small side impact was enough to make all 4 jack stands crumple and the entire tractor slammed down on the floor! It scared the @*%&%$#) out of me!

Now even when I'm under a 3,000 lb car I use a set of heavy duty jack stands (rated for 5 tons) or I use solid blocking.

I have four 2000 pound stands. I'll trust them for holding up my little tractor. Anything else it's blocks. The stand do not have a wide enough base for proper support.

I suggest you go to Sears and get a nice starter Craftsman set, if you dont already have one. You will need both metric and standard sizes of wrenches and sockets. If you get a big enough set, then you'll get some pliers and side cutters, too. All that should run you a couple hundred $$, maybe $300. The Craftsman tools have a very good warranty and you'll be happy with them. A 1/2" drive set is good to start with, since it usually goes from 7/16" up to 1-1/8" or more. The smaller 3/8" drive sets usually only go to 7/8" or so.

Then buy a nice grease gun. That'll cost around $15-25 and get several tubes of grease. I like Mobil XHP222 since it has some water resistance and it is a synthetic.

Lastly, get a whole bundle of tie wraps - those zippy things that you bind things together with. I love them, they are as good as duct tape. Get a few good ones (UV rated for outdoors) and lots of cheapos. Home Depot or Harbor Freight sells those.

A couple of funnels to help you change oil and a couple of good filter wrenches or slip type channel lock pliers. Of course if you dont have any Vice Grips get a couple of those, too. And a nice record book to help you keep track of what you did. Oh yeah, get a $2 pen light - they come in really handy to look into the dark spaces, like a gas tank and under your hood.

There! I helped you spend about $500.

Hint, if you want to go cheap, ask your friends or relatives if they have an old tool set you can buy from them ... or hunt the yard sales, too. Maybe run an ad in the paper wanting to buy a tool set...Rule of thumb is 10-50% of new for a used set of tools.

enjoy and glad to have you on the forum!

FIRST and foremost.... Owners manual, shop/service manual, and parts manual. (The latter being EXTREMELY helpfull when used in conjunction with 1,2.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. From there buy the tools you need to get the job done. As mentioned, grease gun is number one, large hammer will be needed or even a sledgehammer should you bend something. A decent socket and wrench set. If you plan on abusing it, a welder may be needed. Look around for used equipment and save some money.

Wood blocks or cribbing.. or solid concrete pillow blocks.. but not hollow cell concrete blocks... they can be an accident waiting to happen.

When working on a car I usually have the tires off, I toss a tire under the frame as well as jack stands. That'll hold me until Superman comes. :)
