New truck Owners manual

RayH,

That is a better idea. You could set up a website where the user types in their VIN code and pays with a credit card. The laminated pages are then custom printed based on information in a database and mailed back to the customer.

Doesn't help people wondering about how their cylinder deactivation system works, though.

I'm pretty happy with my tractor's user manual, but some laminated spec sheets that you don't have to worry about getting oil on would be nice.

I just photocopied part of the maintenance section and put the pages in sheet protectors. I put those in a small notebook that I can refer to with greasy hands.

I have to disagree. Having a manual that long with so many warnings repeated many times each is not a good job. It just makes most people read very little of it and very rarely use it. Just to carry it to the extereme, if the manual were 10,000 pages coverning the same info would that make it better? I don't think so. When we rewrote some manuals we actually got a legal opinion that making it more consice would convey the really important information better and protect the company better. I was amazed. So that's what we did.

I see your point and totally agree with you, however, our f(&%^d up legal system is why it's that way. People suing because of coffee that's too hot (would they buy it if it were luke warm?) or (and this is probably a myth) but because a guy got up from driving his RV to make a bathroom call and had a wreck. The owner manual didn't say he couldn't do that. Litigation and a lack of common horse sense is hurting this country. I read (online of course) where a couple in Texas was being sued because a neighbor's little kid climbed their privacy fence, broke through the screen surrounding their pool and got drowned. What's wrong with this country? If they had put a doberman out there to protect their property and it had bitten the kid, same lawsuit, different circumstances!

Well we bought a new truck. A Chevy Avalanche so no one has to ask. I sit down at the table with my coffee and think I ought to read the owners manual. Hah! The thing is 680 pages long. Huhhh the operator’s manuals for none of the helicopters I ever flew were that big. There are over 30 pages of how to work the seat belts. Come on the ejection seat manual for an F16 ain’t that big. I don’t think there is a single page with out a big bold block saying you will be maimed or die if you don’t follow these instructions precisely.
Yikes I don’t recall more than two or three of those things in the operator’s manual for an M60 tank and it is designed to kill people. SIZE]

Military manuals are used by people with "knowledge and understanding" of the gear they're using. You are thoroughly trained before getting to operate the equipment and besides, a military member can't sue the Government! That's the difference...anyone can buy a car and operate it today...but, not everyone can eject from an F16, shoot people with a tank etc...

It's the darned legal system...this country's legal system needs an overhaul!

Oh and I kinda wanted to know how the active fuel mangement sytem worked. The syatem where it shifts from 8 cylinders to 4 under light load... Not a word.

It was described in JP magazine - but I am not sure if it is the same engine. It happens via lifters as far as I can remember. 4 cylinders stop on the end of the exhaust cykle - the left over exhaust gas works as a cushion for the piston. Those 4 pistons keep moving up and down, but suction and exhaust valves are closed.

But I am with you on that manual - what a waste.
