df - did you mean older than 1997 ? Either way, I find that a bit surprising.

Good catch. CA did not require smog inspections for diesel PUs and cars until something like 15 years ago. If
your vehicle is older than 1997 model year, then no inspection required. CA still has no smog inspection for
motorcycles, which is surprising considering CA is the world leader in emissions regulations.

This is from memory, so others are welcome to peruse the ordinances and correct me on any details I got
wrong.

Or my '93 and '97 Volvos and our '97 Dodge 1500...

Yes, there's always exceptions. Overall though, rust kills most vehicles; the only reason that my '04 Ranger isn't in the junkyard is because I stop driving it at the first snowstorm. Springs, shackles, shocks, and brakes have all be replaced because of rust. I'm looking for an affordable ton truck down the road a few months and it will be worthwhile to go to Az and have one shipped back. I was looking at Texas or Georgia, but last year's flooding nixed that idea.

I work at a Dodge dealer and I'm a Ford guy through and through. However the Ram trucks are very reliable and do not have many mechanical problems. The ZF8 speed auto transmission is stout.

What I'll say about new GM trucks is prepare to pay out the nose on oil changes, 8 quarts 0w20. Where I work its $10 per quart on synthetic oil.

If I was 20 years younger I would look at that Cummins with a manual tranny and the PTO option.
I can't justify 50k for a truck for what little I will be using it.

I would too if I could afford the payments. Downside is, they detuned the engine to 610 or so ft/lbs of torque with the manual transmission, only because they don't want to put in a good clutch. You get something like a Southbend clutch in it, you could run a 900ft/lb tube without burning up the clutch. Back when I was a kid, only way you could get the high output engine was with a manual. Man how much stuff changes I 20 years.

Rgds, D.

Correct. Even California doesn't inspect my '97 F350 diesel, though it had emissions requirement stuff on it new (catalytic).

It woild need to pay for itself, but 20 years ago I would have found a way. Take care of it, only use it when I needed a big truck and it would last me a lifetime.

No A/C in TX, or just lacking duplicate controls ?

Rgds, D.

It has AC, in fact it blows really cold  It just doesn't have climate control where you set a temp and it modulates accordingly. I find my self constantly bumping the manual control up or down on long drives.
