Conduit only,.... for "Dig Safe".

Don't know about that... but, they did go down a full 3 ft.

I have a 4kv primary direct buried back to my house. It was done early 80’s. I dug the trench and back filled, the electric company provided the cable, transformer and pad as well as the secondary to the house from the transformer. All direct burial.

I too have a direct wire burial line that I did myself in 1984.
PVC has been required for all underground service in this area now for the last 30+ years.

Mine is direct bury, about 450 yards. 4 foot deep. Conduit under road, in the rocky area of the dig, but not everything. Conduit from transformer to house. At that time the power company paid for everything. Today, the customer pays.

I am waiting on my rural electric co-op now to run a new service. They'll direct bury 100ft from their existing pole on my property to the barn. The fee was $125. If it was to a residence it would have been no charge. Sounds like I'm fortunate.

You are. When I upgraded my service (200a to 400a) the power company required me to provide 3" conduit 5 feet below grade. They inspected the trench first, then after backfill they pulled the new wire.

You definitely are- my 175’ for a 400amp service from the junction box to my shop (including a transformer install at roughly 50’ from meter base) was roughly $6k. I did the ditching and backfill myself as well as the conduit sweeps at the meter and transformer.
