Buying Advice Newbie Considering L4400 package deal

Everyone who has replied has been a big help. I am getting lots of great information from all of you. The stump issue is a lot bigger than I imagined. I guess that is what happens with age. :) I am now thinking that a used, larger tractor, with a backhoe may be a better solution. Any advice on this thought would be appreciated as well.

Thanks again to all of you for your quick and thoughtful replies. However, I don't think that I want to try dynamite yet. :)

Get the tractor you want, don't worry about the stumps. The package deal you first mentioned sounds like a pretty good deal, plus you would have new equipment that you wouldn't have to worry about breaking down, etc. Then you can rent or hire an excavator for a few days. Around here you can rent a 15 ton excavator for around $750 a day, or $2000 a week. That may sound like a lot, but you would be amazed at how much quicker an excavator will get stumps out vs any 3pt hitch backhoe on the market.

I purchased an L4400HST package about a year and a half ago pretty much identical to your description. The only add ons I did was a Quick Attach for the loader and a change to R4 tires. The price was close to your quote.

I haven't regretted my decision at all. It's been a great tractor setup--It takes care of our 10 acre property with ease. The brush hog is rated at medium duty and has performed well. I've used the trailer for other tasks also, which makes it a plus to have around. The box blade works fine too.

I agree with others about the stumps--rent an excavator for that job as stump removal is hard on tractors and much more time consuming. You can always remove stumps a few at a time if rental costs are a concern. At any rate, once their gone, that bigger tractor might prove to big for your needs down the road. Long term planning comes into play too. Mike.
