I have purchased 6.5 acres mostly woods. I have had a road built and house site cleared. Barn built. Now need as mall tractor to clean up mess leftover from logging and general cleanup, under brushing , bush hogging etc. I have a tight budget. I have seen a ?4 Farm Pro 2420 (Chinese) with box blade for $2900 but cannot decide on a newer Chinese built or try to find a much older unit with better reputation. Not sure a FEL is in my future or not. I am not a particularly good mechanic but more or less a parts changer. Any ideas as to what to look at? Would like to stay under $3K

Thanks

My first suggestion is to run away from those chinese tractors as fast as you possibly can.

Your budget is very small for most any kind of a tractor that will suit your needs unless you happen across a Ford N series.

That alone will eat up your budget even before attachments.

Looking some more locally today and found a Kubota L200 in great shape with bushog and box blade for $2500. Its a 1971. Would 21 HP be big enough for my needs?

Is that really the most you can afford? U know the old adage pay now or pay later.

If you could get up to the 6,000 range u can get a very good used machine. Deere, Ford, or Kubota. Even at 4k you could get a good farm tractor.

No, but I guess it's better than nothing.

Take your time with it, don't expect much. It's more like a garden tractor, than an actual tractor to do field and woods work.

It's going to be difficult to do general cleanup, etc using a tractor that doesn't have an FEL unless what you want is to tow a trailer with your tractor and load the debris into the trailer by hand.

You probably can find a Ford 8N for $2.5-3K and a used brush hog for a few hundred bucks. Remember, 8Ns are more than 50 years old and need more or less TLC depending on how hard they were run.

Check Craigs list for used tractors (use SearchTempest). Here are the CL listings and asking prices of the 8Ns in the Chico, CA area (near my place): $500, 1700, 3000, 3500, 2200, 1200. Lotsa 8Ns are for sale all the time.

Good luck.

if you are lucky you can find a ford 00 series with a laoder and hog for about 3500$.. or the ford and hog alone for somewhere in the high 2K range.

I'd go for that vs a lawnmower sized machine ..

spending 500$ more now, may keep you from having a 2500$ investment that won't work for you ina few weeks or months.. and then having to buy something else.

Get all your work prioritized, like a day long "event" and just rent one for a day. Most come with FEL and whatever implement you want like a shredder ect tra. Then you will have an idea of what size you would "really" want later and also have more time to shop around and save up some capitol. Just my opinion with your budget.

tdb,

These guys aren't giving that Kubota much credit. I own an L200 (1969), and I own an old Cub Cadet too (1971), and I would call the Cub Cadet a "garden tractor" and the L200 a "small farm tractor". In my mind, "garden tractors" don't have 9.5-24 tires on the rear... but maybe that's just me.

As far as what it will do... that L200 will lift more than double what an 8N will on the 3pt hitch (2,050 lbs.) You will need weight on the front end to do this. I also skid logs pretty regularly with mine. The limit is doug fir about 24" by 16'... that's with a little boom pole. A log arch would make all the difference. The L200 also has six forward gears and two reverse, and a two-speed PTO, which can be nice. Mine handles the 4' brush hog that came with it, no problem... not sure how it would do with a 5' one.

Now the real difference between the two is that Ford parts are everywhere, (literally, I have bought a 2N cap & rotor in stock at the local auto parts store) and L200 parts in the US are hard to come by, to say the least. Some parts are available from Kubota, at Kubota prices. Glow plugs are $45 each, injectors are $50 each, and other parts like gear train and such are "obsolete" according to Kubota, so you'd have to find them in salvage yards or have them made (!).

These are all things I considered when I bought my L200... but I paid $1,200 with the brush hog, and that's all the money I had at the time, so my decision was a little easier... especially since most Fords, etc. go for $2,500 or more around here... it's a retirement community, lots of "hobby" farmers and restorers here.
