....R1’s will provide superior traction on hills compared to turfs, no question.
I’d be afraid of going for an unplanned ride if I tried mowing 25 degree hills with turfs. Not safe.
I have mowed many times at 25 degree slopes, and had nothing but stability with Turf tires on my Kubota. I can mow 25 degree slopes with turf tires on my commercial ZTR and feel very safe. Here in Texas, our county mowing crews specifically require R3/R4 tires in contracts to local farmers. No R1 allowed for safety reasons.
Also Ventrac, who markets a mower capable of handling 30 degree slopes, only provides that mower with wide spaced R3 Turf tires for strong slope stability. The obvious reason is testing and study shows R3 tire tread design allows 90% of the tire to make contact with ground.
