YM240D
I'm new to the forum. Found a lot of helpful info here. I am looking at buying a YM240D and from what I read here they seem like a decent machine. My experience with compact tractors is limited to a IH Lo-boy 185 that I have had for 2 years. Just need something with 4wd and a little more horsepower. The link posted below is to the machine I am considering. Any thoughts? The dealer tells me the hours are original and everything is in good working order. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! 1979 YANMAR YM240 Less than 40 HP For Sale At TractorHouse.com

It's an excellent model. Simple, rugged, near indestructible. I have had a 2wd 240 for six years and haven't broken anything yet, despite making all the beginner mistakes when I started out. But for anything that old, the condition will vary depending on how well previous owners maintained it, changing fluids etc.

Don't pay any attention to '675 hours' unless this is the original owner. The 3-digit meter is just to keep track of maintenance. But if it starts easily, doesn't smoke except under heavy load, and everything works, then more hours won't hurt anything.

This seller may be a little modest about the year. That hood is the final 'level 4' series so more likely 81-82. If it is the original hood then the air cleaner will be external on the left. An air cleaner under the hood was used for level 1-2-3 (about 1977-81).

Be sure to check for abuse and expensive problems. If nothing is found, that is probably a fair price.

What California said . . Looks good, priced right, I would buy it if it checks out ok.

Thanks for the input. Does anyone know the capacity of the front end loader on one of these? It doesn't look like an aftermarket add-on. Hard to find specs on this model. Even TractorData.com doesn't list it.

Loader capacity: Here's a picture lifting a 650 lb tank. This was about the limit. It might lift a little more, but in this soft ground it felt like it might sink in a gopher hole and flop over on its side. You need at least a box blade on the back to counterbalance a lift like this.

The rated weight measured at the back of the loader bucket would be more.

This is a heavy duty Great Bend loader that was probably dealer installed. Yours looks like a Yanmar loader (also US made).

Can't help you on the FEL. I do have the Grey market model YM 2000 2wd and love it. Just yesterday picked up a new Referbished YM 2500 for really a good friend. After getting it back to his place and using it a little is it nicer than the 240/2000 model Yes.Does it put mine to shame No!The 3 cyl. is quieter and smoother but still you can tell not as much torgue as for the HP. difference. My 2000 has been working for me pretty much trouble free. Now I just admire it more and keeping it No doubt. Plus now I'm going to move on to a near perfiect 8N Funk6 of my late grandfathers :D:D

I would think its a fair price, the FEL is well worth 1/2 the asking price leaving the tractor costing only 2500, But to even better sweeten the deal ask if he has a Bush hog cutter he'd throw in? ;) worth a try :D........................
I would operate the FEL and rear 3 pnt lift and be sure to look over the Hydraulic hoses for leaking or dry roting or badly rusted hard lines, Bad hoses need of replacement can run up a cost of your investment, ask if the seller will replace the bad ones in order to close the deal? of course check the oil and Hydraulic fluids for contamination,
How ever not always seeing fresh clean engine oil is a good thing, this could mean changing of bad contaminated oil to make the engine appear to look free of problems, this might sound strange to some folks but I'd rather see normal unchanged oil, this way I can inspect and see the evidents of whats going on inside the engine and even though most contaminates are collected buy the filter you can still inspect the dipstick for metallic frags and if you do see this then you can only imagine what has been collected in the filter, but again if it has gotten to this point the oil would have most likely been changed anyway,
be sure to run it for 20-30 minutes, being sure of no running hot issue's
if the oil has in fact been changed then look again at the fluids to see if anything has mixed with them turning them (milky) not good...
while running check out the Clutch, Gears,Brakes and the PTO, when you cut it off leave the bucket up a few feet as to see if it leaks down quickly or will hold up for a while? be sure a implement is on the rear and do the same as with the front leaving it up,......................... we all don't expect new tractors for these prices, but we certainly don't want to buy them and wind up investing into them what we could have purchased a new refurb tractor for,....... even though tractor house probably has a good reputation the absolute best info about this tractor can be provided by the previous owner,
and if there willing to put you in touch with them then you are dealing with good honest folks....
good luck on your purchase,:)

Went for a road trip yesterday to check the tractor out and ended up bringing it home. Everything worked fine and checked out. The only potential issue was weather cracks in the hydraulic lines, but I see that they are steel braided so hopefully they will last at least till next summer. Other than that and broken headlights, it looks good. When the dealer started it up I thought it was going to throw a rod at me! Then I remembered reading about the "Yammer-hammer" is this forum. If loud is good, then I have a great motor here:). The serial number indicated that it is actually a 1982. Has the 2 speed PTO and rear remote. Got in too late last night to even get it unloaded, so I'm off to play! Thanks for all the great input and information!

Congrats on the tractor purchase sounds like a deal if it was 6 months ago and near here i would have bought it.

Off subject just read your last post and it has a time of 9:06 am this mourn before your going to unload it. I think arkansas is easten time but maybe its central i know missippippi is so i guess you are? So when im reading this at 8:46 am eastern here in SC how can it have been posted at 9:06 eastern? Your an hour behind me so even if its 8am there it should still show 9am, the only thing that would make sense is like in maine dont they have an atlantic time? Where it would have been 9 am there, heck im confusing my self now?
