Justin I would take your alt.to a parts store and see if they can just match it with Datsun. Napa. would be a good place to start for my area.
Also hear is a pic. of what I did for a work light for the rear and it works great Just a fuseable link to a switch to the battery so I only use it if I need to and it's bright.:D

I was just curious..... Does anyone know if that 72' Datsun alternator work for some of the smaller models like the 1610D? That would be great to get more amps for external lights.

Justin
I don't think so. The shape is different and there is no space to install the Hitachi/Yanmar/Datsun automotive alternator on the smaller Yanmars.

And Yanmar's 1980's Powershift-generation tractors apparently use a later generation of peripherals. I haven't seen anyone identify what they are similar to.

In technical terms (and I'm over my head here, somebody add to this if you can) I think the little 'pancake' alternators have a permanent magnet inside, while the larger automotive type alternators use an electromagnet which allows higher output. So you can't get high output out of a pancake alternator.

Elsewhere I read that the alternator used in Geo and Suzuki was the tiniest automotive alternator. Maybe someone can make one of those fit. But I'm not sure that approach is cost-effective.

Maybe switching to LED headlights and worklights, to reduce electrical load, would be simpler.

If you cannot increase the wattage output, then you can reduce the wattage output. LED bulbs use almost no electricity to produce equivalent light. Do a search on "LED" in the customization forum. I know that I have a thread in there and there are others who have had great threads there. I use MR-11 bulbs in the head lights and they draw 1.2 watts each. (.1 amps apiece) You can put a lot of light out for almost no amp usage.

I was also thinking about the LED lights, since they draw less current. Were knee deep in snow at the moment, and I do all my pushing at night so lights are almost mandatory. Ive got a pretty big battery in it right now which helps but if the headlights and rear light are on too long, it gets pretty hard to start it when I shut it off. I let it run 16 hours straight on wednesday after we got blasted with snow so it wasnt a problem then.

I would be interested in a rear mount LED if anyone knows of a good place to find one thats not too high priced.

Curiosity was getting to me so I had to go check. I knew it wasn't much when I had to fix the wiring on it when I bought it. @1200 rpms I run 13.25 Dcv. It only pulls .35 with the head lights and work light on .22 with only the work light on. Or 12.90 or 13.03 more than plenty. I have no way to check amps. Do not know your setup. That is just another plus in having the 240/2000 tractor and how simple and efficient it is.:D Maybe you might be possible to use the same alternater. Doubtful Cali. would have most likely been all over that. The work light was Already on there when I bought it and the only marking on it was made in Taiwan can't help much on that.

The '72 Datsun alt/reg work for the YM1600 and 1700, but not the 1610.
