Checking the pressure with a straw is very common as long as you wait the standard (2hrs min) after going over any bumps to avoid the beer from blowing out your nose.

However, a regular tire gauge (good dial one) works well. I'd fill all 4 tires, although that's subject to opinion.

That's funny. Reminds me that they used to use alcohol in the compasses on Navy ships to keep them from freezing and to make the liquid just a little viscus. But the sailors would drill tiny holes in the glass and suck out the alcohol, so they had to switch to something else.
