The Woods/ Gannon 76 HSD?? 1247 lb of Goodness

have no idea on delivery time
Mine is 20+ years old. Really like except for not being QH compatible. That & kind of worn in places from years of abuse. It was a definite upgrade from the 72" King Kutter box. The KK was ok & had a clevis mount. But the weight on the Gannon makes it so much more effective.

Speaking of weights, anyone have suggestions for adding weight to a BB? I have the EA 78" at 545# and I would like to add 2-300 # to it, preferably a method that won't take paint off or get it the way of scarifier adjustments.

I have seen sections of train rail u-bolted to the frame.

Mine is Bush Hog brand 6'. Can't say I'd recommend it over a TSC or generic brand. Not really heavier and I managed to chip/break/angle every tooth on the rippers. Ratchet strapping a 5' on top of it to almost double the weight made it work really well. PIA to deal with that contraption, but made it work like you think it should, cutting in places it wanted to skim over.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Just light gravel road maintenance, a general purpose one is fine. If you really want to do some cutting or not worry about buried rocks breaking stuff, probably worth the wait or extra $ for a truly HD one (I say it that way since even the crappiest are called "heavy duty" in ads frequently).

It is real easy to add weight to a lighter one though to make it work better. Simplest I saw was bent rebar welded on to hang basic plate weights (like from a home gym picked up cheap at a yard sale).

The big problem with that is a heavy box blade means lots of steel & strength. If you add weight to a light box blade it isnt any stronger, but will experience more forces on it.

I chained some grader blades (future LPGS parts mostly) to the top of my old 72c KK box. It helped it cut & it didnt get damaged. Paint got rubbed off, but I really didnt care. I still ended up upgrading to the old heavily worn 76" Gannon. Despite the wear ut was a noticable upgrade.

A great technique to getting a lighter weight box blade (like many designed for SCUTS/CUTS) to cut deeper is "false starts"

Generally a BB set to an aggressive cutting angle (shortened top link) will cut to the depth where the weight initially bites in...by making several "false starts" from the same position with the 3PH all the way down the blade will bite a little deeper each time...
...With the *right speed* the blade will continue to cut at the deeper level...unless a root or a rock (tip of iceberg) causes the the box to lift...

** Speed can make a big difference in what a box blade will do with a particular angle setting etc...
If you are getting a poor performance out of a lighter box blade...try slowing down...

Taking a little longer like having to reverse a few times after false starts for cut passes is a simple work around for dealing with a lighter implement...

I've had my Woods BSS72 for a few years now and no trouble with it. Does what I need. Weighs in at around 550 lbs.
