Me, too, Rat. Now if I could just turn the clock back a little over 50 years to the first time I used a tractor . . . .. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Of course, 50 years ago, a vacuum shift '46 Chevy was good enough for me, too, but that was before I learned about things like automatic transmissions, power steering, power brakes, air-conditioning, power windows, and a few other little things I wouldn't want to give up now. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Of course, some folks still drive manual transmission cars and trucks, too, and if that's what suits them, that's what they ought to buy, isn't it? ( You guys really got off track on this one. Not one of you helped the original poster out at all. You all should know by now not to turn a thread into a hydro versue gear thread. The posters original comment was that he preferred the hydro and not one of us should steer him another way. Now he may have to go gear to get into the price range he has to be or go used. But I have been in them positons before where I wanted something and I let someone else talk me into something else and then regrettted it.

Whew, now I feel better and hope every one gets off the hydro versus gear issue.

Insulting hydro users wasn't my intention at all. And yes what I said was a qualified statement according to market analysis of tractor buyers. If you go back and read my post you'll find that I said nothing bad about hydros, quite the contrary. I just tried to say that modern gear tractors are also fine machines. My 2 hydraulic shuttle shift tractors are much easier to oeprate for long term loader operation than any of the hydros I have used. Just a flick of the wrist forward to reverse- no clutch vrs all that tiring foot action of a hydro. Yes tiring at least for me. Clearly to each his or her own. John, I think you jumped to conclusions that I didn't inytend in my post. This board just has so many users that believe if it isn't a hydro, it's second rate and nothing could be further from the truth. I just wanted the original poster to not count out a gear model.

I did go back to the dealer when he said that he couldn't find a used TC29 with hydro. His suggestion was to jump up to the used TC33 which he did have on his lot. I told him to go to his other dealerships and look for a TC24 with hydro. The price he quoted me first was the 15K for the TC29 gear drive. I told him that was my limit, but would wait until he got back to me which he did, but not on a used on. The only thing he could find was a new TC29. He never mentioned finding a new or used TC24. I would certainly consider it if it was a good deal.

I got a little worried by some of the post that thought the price high. What is a fair range for the TC 24 or TC29 with hydro and FEL?

Andy, I don't believe market analysis says "Hydrostatics are fine for new and occasional users," and that statement IS insulting to hydro users, just for the record. No jumping to any conclusion, you made the conclusion with that statement. Enough said. I apologize to the original poster for this off-topic. John

I just bought a used tc29 gear with fel for 9k. it was near chicago and im in NE Kansas. I just rented a trailer and picked it up. cost me less than shipping and was about 4k less than what I could find around here. sometimes it pays to look around.

Once again thhat's not what I was trying to say. I was saying that if you look at the demographics of compact tractor buyers, many of the people buying hydros are new first time users. There has been a decided change in what home owners are buying over the years, first the move to power mowers, then self propelled power mowers, then lawn tractors in ever larger sizes, and now compact utility tractors. Manufacturers have been continually refining their products to meet the changing demands and user profiles. In the under something hp class (and I forget what) it's about 90% hydros sold. But if you move up a few horse power where many second and tird time tractor buyers buy many hydro shuttles and power reversers are sold. At a certain hp level for most manufacturers hydros are no longer available. How do I know this, because I have been working with a dealer who is considering a second location and additional lines who purchases a substancial amount of market research. This research includes data on all tractor sales by hp, brand and manufacturer for all regions of the US as well as market trends. Some manufacturers are excluded because they choose not to report their sales.

Now where in this statement does it say that hydros are no good or no good for experienced users. I have never said hydros are no good. I have many thousand hours on tractors over 40 years including hydros. Looking back, I think I could have phrased it better, but I think some of you just read the first part of the sentence and ignored the second half. Like the sound byte error used in news reporting /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

No, Andy, you don't SAY hydros are no good, but you also don't say that experienced tractor users would like hydros. What you say is, even though it's been quoted many times, Hydrostatics are fine for the new and occasional user. We certainly read the rest of it which does not change the first of it, and I think we all agree that the gear models are just fine too. Most of us started on them and would probably use them again if we needed to or the brand we want only offered them. But can't you see that the way it's worded is a cutting statement causing a lot of long term tractor users to be offended? I personally don't really care about the argument, I like shuttle shifts too and I can go pretty fast with one, but I wouldn't WANT to go back to straight gear drive again. BTW, I'm not upset with you in the least. I would just like you to understand that you CAN offend with the way you worded your post. Obviously from the responses, I was not the only one who caught that feeling. I've posted a few real zingers myself not realizing how it would be perceived, and probably will again, but that's the nice thing about most on TBN, we can take it and not be angry. John
