I forgot to mention that I had completed this repair a while ago. I drove it several times by just jumping the terminal at the starter with a screwdriver. (That also let me get it off the soft ground and into the garage.)
The repair was easier than I thought. I had been worried about dealing with the filled R4 rear tire when I removed it, but with the chains on, the tire would stand up on its own (though I still leaned it against a post in the garage). Replacing the switch itself was simple, once the wheel was off: remove two screws, unplug the connector, plug in the new on, replace two screws, then adjust the position of the switch so that the two bumps on the range shift lever cam activate the switch when in neutral and tighten down the screws.
