I will try to get out there later today and take a picture of the cavity. Its a mess, as this stump was quite close to my next victim and some of the roots were entangled.

My forks are 48" long. You sink them puppies into the ground 3 feet and you have got something quite solid. I bring them in just under the root at about a 45 degree angle. I slowly creep forward as I am curling the bucket down. I am pivoting on the ends of the forks and the back of the forks are putting pressure on the root. At the same time the fence on the back of the fork attachment is applying pressure to the top of the stump. The forks are rated at 3000 lbs.

Spencer, I have to admit that I thought you were putting us on with that photo but then remembered what a neighbor did with a shovel and sawzall(with 12" blade). I would estimate that would take me at least a half hour to dig with my 758C BH. Congrats on a job well done and be careful.

At the risk of further self humiliation, the Derby hat and flash pan is from the beginings of photography, when cameras were set on tripods and the cameraman held a metal pan of black powder above his head for the flash of light. Forestry related photographs from this era were commonly staged for bragging rights. My wagon holds more than your wagon stuff. You seem to be a good sport and interrupted your accomplishment correctly and feel free to aim a missle at my upcoming post on my homebuilt front forks!! SteveV

Spence,
The success and completion of that project was well deserving of a solid pat on the back, a cold brew and 5 smiley faces. Cheers ! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Randy,
Here is a pic of the hole that the stump came out of. Sorry it is not real clear, its hard to judge the depth.

Spencer,

Thanks for the picture, it is an impressive sight. I noticed in your bio that you live in Western Michigan. The groung there looks a lot like the "muck" around the Grand Rapids area. My wife came from what was once a small town, Hudsonville.

In New Hampshire the ground has more stone in it and something we call hard pan. It takes a pick to loosen it up just so you can dig with a shovel. Once those tree roots get wrapped around a few stones it takes a bit of digging to get them to move. Most of the dirt on the root ball stays firmly attached.

I'm afraid the forks would not penetrate the ground very far here, they would keep bouncing off stones. Still the feat you accomplished is well worthy of a WOW.

I think the tractor deserves a medal for going above and beyond the call of duty. Be careful out there.

Being a NH tractor owner myself, I would expect no less from these fine machines /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif.

Long live blue machines.
