NH TC35/40/45 vs. Kubota L & Grand-L30?

This thread is about L & Grand-L30 tractors. That being said. Both my Kubota tractors (B7100HST & B2910) have what appears to be smooth casting like Aluminum. But when checked with A magnet, they are cast iron or steel. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I just finished the process you are starting on. The models I looked at were nh tc40a, kub 4330, jd 4120. All are fwd with front loader, gear trans. The nh dealer was 15 mi, kub 5, jd 40 away. The best prices I got were nh $22200, jd $22700, kub $23500. Tractor weights were jd 3700 lb, nh 2700 lb, kub 3500 lb. Hydraulic flow was jd 12 gpm, nh 9.8 gpm, kub 9.4 gpm. Bucket lift capacity was jd 2700, nh 2300, kub 2400. For my usage which involves a lot of field work on 35 acres, the light weight and less hyd. capacity took the nh out of the running. Depending on your intended usage any of these models may be the best for you and they are probably the best in the class. For myself, the long drive for the jd was worth it. The fact that the jd was all American including engine also contributed to my decision.

The one issue for me that moved me from both JD and CNH to Kubota was the availability of a high quality factory cab with factory A/C. I'd only owned JD's and New Holland machines previously. JD is now beginning to bring out factory cabs in this size, but I have not seen that in CNH. What's up with that?

Sorry, I do realize that a cab was not a factor in the original question. However, it did make 100% of the difference for me in my personal decision.

Thanks Mike, that's where I must remember that from when looking at Kubota from Carver years ago. Glad to hear that the Grands are all cast iron/steel. When my neighbor and I were looking at the JD 4310, the dealer sales rep told use that rear axle was cast aluminum. Now you must also understand that the casting of the high alloy either 6061 T6, 6061 T351, 7075 aluminums approach, or equal the tensile properties of mild A36, or 1010 steels. It's when you get to the modulus of elastisity where the irons, and steels are a bit tougher. Thereby offering a bit more ability to absorb unexpected high spiking shock loads. This is a non-issue for most of us. I choose the NH also mainly due to it's loader, and it's ergonomics. The only better one out there for that in my humble, limited experience is John Deere. We both drove the 4310, and OH-LA LA, what a machine. It shifted better than some cars, and trucks I've driven. Tractorman, I sent you a PM about the Deluxe features difference of the NHs TC45DA, and the 48DA. No swivel seat on the TC48, or 55 DAs. A bit of a double standard in the NH line. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow, live and learn. I was all set to say "Hey, no way, the 4000 series are Yanmar, you have to go to the 5000 series to get genuine JD". Good thing I went to the JD website first. When I was tractor shopping around the beginning of '04, I was looking at the 4000 Ten series, which are Yanmar-powered (and basically Yanmar tractors too?). I didn't realize that the 20's are all-JD, with the legendary PowerTech engine.

I have heard stories about strained relations between the top executives of JD and Yanmar. I can imagine the following phone call to Yanmar - "Oh yeah, well why don't you take your engines and stick 'em up your ***, we happen to build a pretty good one ourselves". /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good job on buying American, and setting the record (and me) straight.

Your right to an extent N80. We don't seem to sell as many of the Non Deluxe models - the D35,D40 & D45 as we do the Deluxe Hydrostatic Drive models. I don't think that alot of NH or Case IH dealers even stock many of these models. I usually have several on hand only because there are customers who either don't like hydrostatic drive, or else they are stretching their budgets enough just going for the non-deluxe. I personally still like the feel of a tractor w/ a clutch, 12 Speed Transmission and a foot throttle especially when doing field work. Just curious N80, when you went to the NH dealer did he even mention the non-deluxe model?

No, we never got that far. This was a NH and MF dealership and they really blew me off. At the point in time that I went there I was a total and complete newb. Didn't even really know what I was looking for. But the salesman was clearly not interested in giving me any guidance. He wouldn't even walk out into the lot and show me the tractors. He had a few very nice NH's that he pointed at and gave me some ballpark prices, all of which were way more than I wanted to spend. When I asked what MF had to offer he just said that they cost more. I had to ask for a NH brochure.

At Kubota and JD the salesmen immediately asked me questions to determine my needs (and ignorance), took me right out on the lot to look at machines. I probably had a little better idea of what I was after when I went to them. But like I've said before, what more could a salesman wish for than a newb with a little money in his pocket.

Those were the three dealers I had locally, so I knew at that point I wasn't going to the NH/MF dealership so I did not do anymore research into them. I picked the Kubota over the JD mostly based on the available financing at the time. I later bought a mower at the JD dealership.

Bottom line is that for us new buyers, the nature of the local dealer can be as important as the tractor specs or price.

N80

Your from SC like me, in my area there are 3 dealerships, JD, NH/MF, and Kubota

I'm wondering if your in the same part of SC as I am with your list of dealerships.

I'm in York County.

Yep, Rock Hill. Who did you buy from? (I should also mention that one of my partners is very fond of the NH dealership, bought his tractor there (5-6 years ago) and is friends with several of the guys there.)

I live in Sumter, SC and traveled about 100 miles to Aiken (I burned up the phone lines for a couple weeks before hand) before I found a dealer that worked to earn my business. I really appreciated his expertise and help in guiding my buying decision. He really seemed genuinely interested in helping me get the perfect tractor for my needs as opposed to selling me his most expensive equipment. Most of the equipment out there is good – often times it is the dealer that makes the difference.
