Nice little 3020 I picked up

Rich,

My main concern was that this is an AG tractor and may be a little big for my needs (15 acres). I asked the owner about how the metal was and he said there wasn't any rust.

An escavator buddy of mine said that I wouldn't be happy with this tractor because it is almost 10,000 lbs and didn't have a loader. He said that even if I could put a loader on it I would probably sink the front end (and get stuck) as soon as I hit a soft spot (since its 2WD).

I was thinking it would be great for mowing and tilling and even contract baling (if I bought a baler). But I'm so busy as it is, the baling wouldn't be a legitimate justification for buying it.

The owner is going to get it Wednesday. He is supposed to call me with the actual hours.

So using oil on a big baling day is not a big concern? I wasn't sure.

I may go see it regardless of my needs. It just sounded like a decent deal but I need to get a little more information. Any other questions I should ask?

If I decide no, I will PM you A.S.A.P....or PM me your cell number because he said others were interested also. I asked him to give me first dibs though.

Thanks,

Richard,

It looks like they put your "new" 3020 on the cover of the new issue of Acreage magazine. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Dave,

I have a 4020 and use it for everything. I disagree with your friend about it being too heavy. Unless you are in swampy ground you won't have a problem. The 4020 is a great tractor for what you are wanting to do. Most of these have differential lock and it's tough to get them stuck. If you have a loader you won't get stuck, unless you absolutely bury it and even then 4wd isn't going to help, because you have the loader to push yourself out with. When you consider the equivalent of this tractor is $60-70k new $8k for one isn't bad. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Our 4020 pulls a 12' offset disk in most conditions. It has gotten stuck once or twice. Nothing you couldn't winch out with the JD 450 dozer though. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Did you ever find out why the 4720 did not come with hydro?

This tractor gets rebuilt by Deere, as a promotion, complete with new hourmeter etc.

That sure is a pretty tractor. As mentioned earlier, I had rather have that tractor, than a lot of the new ones by Deere or many other Mfgrs. I was Just wondering outloud. Did John Deere do the restoration at one of thier assembly facilities or was it done at a authorized John Deere dealer?--Ken Sweet

I bought one this year. It is the new style, clip on duals, power shift, 4010 total hours in great shape for 9K. These are outstanding machines.

Really once you drive it it does not seem that big anymore. We have a 4020 as a shop tractor and use it for everything. I have begun to love it and hated it before I drove it so much. We have the 720 loader on it made by John Deere. It can lift a ton of dirt in that large bucket and it gets good traction when pushing into large dirt piles.

I guess what I want to know is:

The 4020 I'm supposed to see Wed. is 2WD...everyone here says (pretty much everyone anyways) "If you get a FEL get 4WD.". If I get a loader for this unit is it going to be ok?

What should I look for? The owner already said it used oil on heavy baling days. I don't want to get suckered into buying an $8,0250.00 piece of junk.

The guy I know that escavates for a living says I won't be happy with it, it's too big. The way I figure it is; I was going to buy a new style 4320 with a FEL for over $24,000. For well under the difference I should be able to get the 4020 a FEL and a also finish mower/tractor to do around the house and still have money left.

Thought? I have until tomorrow. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks,

The 4020 is a tad big to be finish mowing with around the house. With some 90 Hp you won't be able to find a finish mower within decent size to mow around your house unless you want a 15 foot batwing mower.

You don't need 4 wheel drive on a tractor this size with a front end loader. It is heavy enough to get traction on dirt. Compact tractors are too light to get good traction with only 2wd. I bet a 720 FEL is 7 or more grand. They are quite large loaders and will beat the heck out of a loader on a new 4000 TWENTY series machine! If your going to be doing finish mowing with a 72'' cut the 4020 is not going to cut it it's too big. But if you are going to be working the land and planting crops the 4020 is your cup of tea.
