I doubt it'll get that high. Probably closer to 25 mpg would be my guess.
thats 9.4l/100km so i guess that should be my guess too, for a vehicle weighing close to 3 ton. I get that kind of mileage with my 2.5 TDI towing at that kind of total weight at 100kmh.

If they achieve that, depends on how they tune the engine, and if the gear ratios match that engine specifications. But 30mpg... no they wont get that in an overweight half ton pickup truck...

I dunno why not - remember the GM V8 gas conversion debacle? That engine got 30 mpg on my Dad's huge Pontiac station wagon. What was that - 5.7L?

So why can't they get 30 mpg from a modern 5.0L and vehicle weight similar?

Not trying to diss anyone, just wondering why not?

"Anyways if Ram saw a need for a lighter industrial heavy duty diesel, they would have put the Cummins ISB4.5 in it, it would also put out around 250hp and plenty of torque.. But manufacturers dont see the need for lower hp heavy duty, proven their choice to make a lighter duty automotive style engine. "

Renze,
I was hoping somebody would put that engine into a LD pickup - but the thing is so expensive I can see why no one did. It needs a counterbalancer shaft to damp the enormous harmonic vibration, common to all in-line 4 cylinder engines, but amplified by the huge available peak cylinder pressure from this common rail engine.

That's exactly the point - I agree.....you don't take a mid size farm tractor / industrial engine & horseshoe it into a LD truck & expect the masses will buy it....they haven't. It will depend how much mileage (& maybe GHG lowering) the light duty 5.0L diesel will deliver for the money vs. fancy SI engines like Ford's ecoboost.

This is all very interesting!

I kind of agree for the most part, But, the difference between 24 mpg eco boost and a 28-30 mpg light diesel isn't sooo large, give me a 300hp/450 ft/# 3/4 yon getting 20 mpg please. Basically specced out like the big block gas speccs, and maybe half the upgrade price of the "real" diesels.

Yes but the diesel will get better MPG loaded, the eco boost's MPG drops faster than a rock!!

I vote light duty diesel.

I like the nissian spec, but I don't see needing 400+ ft/# in a half ton. I also would for some reason feel better with it being offered by dodge/chevy/ford. The dodge-fiat sounds like a good match for a half ton.

I would not want much less then that in a half ton. They get worked too.

I just haven't been in truck market since 2005, when I bought a 6.0 gas chevy 2500. It was ~300hp/~330 ft/# and when I started looking at speccs of the 2013s I was surprised to find 360hp in the bottom line f150 that I drive at work. Don't get me wrong, it will run out, but I was really surpised by the specc creep. In 2004 I remember looking at 7.3l fords, and not thinking anyone could ever need more tha there 350hp/600 ft/#. Now the diesels are 400+/800.

I would think it will cost you $5k more for the small block diesel? Than add into the cost of the def fluid and overall cost of maintaining emissions. And if you hang on to it more than 3 to 5 yrs, add in the cost to replace the emissions side of the motor. Plus more money to do regular service intervals.....
