1952 Ferguson TO-30
I have an almost new L4740 with about 10 hours. I also have a 55 year old Ferguson TO30. I've noticed that the 4740's throttle doesn't seem to have an RPM governor like the TO30 does, and I'm wondering why.

When the going gets tough for the TO30, the throttle cranks up automatically in an attempt to hold the same RPM. The 4740 just "gives up" -- the engine RPM's drop and it's not too hard to stall.

Is there a way to make the 4740 behave like the TO30? Or is this just the way things are with the newer tractors?

Thanks,

Jeff

Check a little closer and chances are you'll find there is one probably integrated with the injection pump.:D

Have you done much experimenting with different gears and ranges for the jobs at hand when you are using it?:D

I know exactly what you mean. You can really notice when the governor kicks in on some of those older Masseys. On many of the newer tractors you can't detect the governor even though it is present. However, the fuel usage will usually vary a fair amount depending on the task at hand. Example, the fuel consumption on my M8200 varies quite a bit between working hard and doing light work.

What mode are you running when it "gives up?"

What range?

Okay... I feel dumb...

I did not have the HST in the stall guard mode.

As for gears, the 3-way selector was in medium and the steering column selector was in low.

I haven't tried stall guard yet; I will do so the next time I have an opportunity.

Hey Jeff,

Hows that new tractor working out for you? Did you get a back hoe for it?

Yup, got a Woods BH90X. I was just using it this morning to cut my irrigation ditch, which I started yesterday afternoon. I started closer to the house, so you wouldn't have seen me out near the road.

I've done about 70' so far (in about 3 1/2 hours)... My backhoe technique has a long way to go, but I'm slowly improving. The hardest part is getting things lined up correctly while working on a slight slope. The slope is just enough that the stabilizers can't get me level if the tractor is in-line with the trench (not enough to be dangerous though), so I have to work with the tractor at an angle relative to the trench which makes moving the tractor along a somewhat time-consuming task.
