I worked doing plumbing and electrical, and agree there are alot of hacks. But it is still a free country. If they have to call a pro in, it is their problem.

Its not the governments to protect people form them selves. Natural selection works, if u let it.

I had to replace mine last summer. Since I was recovering from corneal transplant surgery I could neither see well and was not allowed to lift anything more than a couple of pounds, I had to hire someone to install it.
I have always done my own replacement work in the past, it's not very complicated. We don't have much in the way of restrictions here for a homeowner to do their own work.
I do find that as I get older and less flexible that some things that I did in the past I now prefer to hire someone to do. My wife likes it if I'm not the one on the ladder now as well.

Pretty soon we'll have to get a permit to fart.

Last April (4/3/2015 in fact) I had our 50 gallon water heater replaced. Ours is in a closet in the hall in the middle of the house, so you can imagine the mess a leak would have caused. We were actually not having any problem with the old water heater, but it was installed in 1991 when the house was built, so being 24 years old, I decided to not push our luck any further. .

We had a 50 gallon gas water heater that was put in an inside closet type enclosure. It was installed 1996 and was fine but I didn't trust it. I bought a new nice one from HD and installed it on an elevated platform in out garage. I re-piped everything just because if it leaked I could never have taken the time to do it right. It would just have been a replacement in the same spot. I did find the pressure relief was so plugged it would never have worked anyway.

It must be the location because I just went to HD internet and delivered it to HD and picked it up there. No paper work or documentation needed.

South has less unions, that is one of my guesses.

Nice set up Murphy, please don't be offended.

As a plumber here is what I would have done different.
Used Dielectric unions in place of the 3/4" female adapters.
Since you had room, I would have put the ball valves up higher so the next change out there is plenty of room to cut and sweat in a coupling.
Anyhow it looks great.
