Correct about Virginia. Can place farm use tags on vehicle, but they have clamped down a little in that it can not be used on cars or vans. Has to be a vehicle that actually does some sort of work, like hauling or pulling.

I've had farm use tags on my truck for over ten years, only place my truck goes anymore is to the landfill, gas station or repair shop. Always keep a tractor oil filter on the seat in case I get stopped by the police. I have not paid Virginia car taxes on the truck in over ten years. My state (Virginia) is broke so I don't know how much longer it will last. We do have at least one state representive who is a want-a-be farmer who sells sweet corn off his farm each summer and is probably getting a USDA check each month.

For example, I know Virginia has, or did have when I was a kid living there, a 'farm vehicle' law that allowed you to put FARM VEHICLE on a truck/etc for something used primarily on the farm, or to go to town for farm related business. I think there was a mileage restriction of something like 30 mile radius of the farm. No tag or registration fees were required (if I recall right). Seemed like a very sensible law for vehicles used on public roads very little.

Not sure "Sensible" is a term folks in VA would agree with right now.

This law has caused issues for years but with the *recent* economic down turn, more people are using this law to try and skirt / save on taxes & fees.

Yupp - from Article 1 - In 2010, the Virginia General Assembly tightened restrictions on use of such plates, limiting the plates to pickup trucks, panel trucks, trailers, semitrailers, sport utility vehicles and vehicles having a gross weight rating of more than 7,500 pounds.

And things have trickled down from there. Localities are cracking down, burden of proof is higher, and in some places they are looking at even changing tax law to try and recover lost revenue from this law.

I know these two articles are a little old but the "feud" continues nonetheless and maybe VA isn't the best neighbor to point to as an example right now (unless you're saying - we have to do better than this).

Texas has farm use tags for vehicles (and trailers) used for farming at a reduced rate. It's about a $20 savings. But vehicles/trailers over 10k GVWR fall into a different commercial category and I'm not familiar with those laws. No tags are required for tractors or implements as they don't have titles here and thus not registered. Tractors with lights and can be used on roadways for transit. "Roadway" includes right-of-way so if you're cutting or traveling on the side/berm, you better have lights. I frequently cut the grass in front of my property that abuts a state highway; Otherwise, it may only be cut once a year by the state. Most all the neighbors do the same. Keeps the road looking nice.

I don't know the law very well here in TX, but just some generalities. If you have an ag exception on your land, you do not have to pay sales tax when buying a vehicle, or tractor, or trailer, and a lot of other things, when purchasing that item. You have to have a number assigned to your property before you can do this. On my trailers, it's a lower rate to register it every year. I did not do it on my truck because you can only use that vehicle for things related to your farm or ranch. The way it was explained to me, if I get pulled over and I have something in the back of my truck that is not related to farming, like a piece of furniture, or groceries, then I am in violation of the ag exception by using my truck for personal use. I use it for work most of the time and decided it wasn't worth the cost savings compared to the risk of getting caught and having to pay the fines. Kind of like red diesel. Lots cheaper, but don't get caught with it in your personal vehicle on the highway!!!

I am pretty sure in MA you have to have filed MA taxes with farm income to qualify for a plate.

Tenn. has farm plates. I haven't check on them as to cost. I do believe there is a miles from home thing.

Can you cite a law or website I can look at on this ? I've never seen one in Tennessee, and have searched the net for a reference and not found anything that says this.

There is also a 50 mile limit. You must be using it for a farm related task.

I live in Arkansas and they do have farm tags for trucks but even though I have a farm number I don't get farm tags. A long term resident told me that farm tags cost more than regular tags, but I haven't checked on that basically because I don't use my vehicles enough for farm issues to justify. I get mine for $3.50 for my truck (Veteran tags) but have to pay the $30 or so for my wife's SUV. Trailer tags are a one time thing and good for life so those are cheap enough, don't remember the cost for my boat trailer or 20 foot car hauler but it wasn't much.

Here are the rules for Texas - TxDPS - CVE Farm Registration.

The savings are pretty substantial now with recent changes in inspection and registration. For example, my 10,400# GVWR trailer is $7/yr to inspect and $110/yr for registration. If I had farm plates on it, it would be no inspection and $5/yr for registration.

For farm vehicles, the registration cost is 50% of the regular fee, so it would save me about $45/yr on my F250.

While I do have an ag exemption for my "poultry business," my truck and trailer really wouldn't fall under the guidelines so I haven't risked it. I might go ahead and do it for my trailer though, it's used to haul the tractor or hog traps, both of which could be argued as farm related activities. Jumping from $60/yr to $110/yr plus the hassle of an inspection makes it more appealing than it was before.
